Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24000
OpenOffice Launcher causes reboot
Last modified: 2004-02-23 11:33:52 UTC
OpenOffice 1.1.1a Software: WinXP Pro (all the latest updates from windowsupdate.com) IE 6 (latest version from windowsupdate.com) NAV 2003 APC PowerChute Personal Edition WebWasher Classic SimpleDNS Plus (DNS Server) System Safety Monitor (application sandbox) Spyware Guard (real-time mal-ware checker) Hardware: 2.4GHz P4 512MB RAM 80GB free hard drive space 1.5Mbps always-on DSL connection Problem: The machine has been running stably for quite a while, no problems at all. I installed OpenOffice 1.1.1a, and it runs well, too. The problem occurred when I rebooted. The machine would start up and boot until just before it got to the log-in screen, where it would pause, then reboot. It kept doing this until I booted into Safe Mode, and disabled the OpenOffice Launcher from starting. I'm running an application sandbox that only allows authorized programs to run (System Safety Monitor), but I'd already authorized OpenOffice Launcher to run, so that can't be the problem. I believe it occurs when soffice.exe initializes prior to logging-in.
os->mba: Any idea?
I don't think that any office code during quickstarter initialization can force WinXP to reboot, so I assume it's a part of the Win API based code.
I doubt that the office internal code can force Windows to reboot, so I assume that it's a part of the code that uses the Windows API
hro@hillscap: I assume you ment the OpenOffice Quickstarter (quickstart.exe) when talking about "OpenOffice Launcher". I'm wondering how you got it running before logging in. The OpenOffice Quickstarter is executed during personalized startup through the Startup folder in the programs group. This is executed AFTER login. So I feel you configured soffice.exe to be started before login what it isn't designed for. Anyhow that should not cause a reboot. I'm not aware of any API that soffice.exe uses that might implicitely or explicitely cause a reboot. The only possible explanation would be that soffice.exe crashes in such a manner that it causes a soft reset of the computer (Windows is not shuting down, similary to pressing the reset button). It's not very likely that Windows XP can be hurt in such a way but though possible. So is it that kind of reboot you're talking about ?
Description isn't specific enough. Cannot investigate without a detailed description.
