Under the File->Properties->Statistics, the OpenOffice Word Processor provides a
number of useful statistics about the document, however, it counts all words in
the document including the words in the footnotes.  In MS Word, there is a
checkbox to disallow counting of footnotes and endnotes.  A similar feature
would be useful especially in academic papers with word count limits, which do
not count footnote and endnotes.
