Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 23559
Text highlighting incompatibility with MS Word
Last modified: 2005-11-09 20:27:51 UTC
Text highlighting is processed differently in OpenOffice.org than it is in MS Word. Many users would obviously be confused while trying to remove OOo Writer highlighting in MS Word, as this task cannot be done with MS Word's toolbar highlight buttons. You have to go to Character/Shading and select 'No Fill' there to remove the highlight. I am inclined to think this is really an inconsistence in MS Word, rather than in OOo. I prefer to have only one type of highlighting, as it is done in OOo, but the incompatibility issue should be addressed anyway - by modyfying the MS Word export filter.

MRU->BH: I don't think, that this is worth the effort... Both Applications (Word and OO Writer) have this "Highlighting" stored as character background. In Word, there's just a different UI for this.
This may well not be worth the effort, but it is not true that this is a UI thing. Apparently, MS Word offers two different ways of making colored background - one through character background, and second through table cell fill. To see this, just select some text in Word, highlight it to any color with a toolbar button, then go to Format/'Borders and Shading' and to 'Shading' tab. You'll see 'No fill'. That's why it is not easy for a regular user to find out how to remove OOo highlighting in MS Word. BTW, I see no reason why Word has two modes of highlighting. One is definitely enough.

I would call this issue a DEFECT since it causes a breakdown for the user.
