Description noddyholder 2003-12-07 15:19:13 UTC
I upgraded from OOo 1.0.3 to 1.1. Documents created using 1.0.3 with page
numbers using Insert->Fields->(choose a field) were fine in that version. But
after the upgrade the field data was replaced with the name of the field. For
example, page numbers that were working fine in 1.0.3 are replaced with the
words "page number" in 1.1.

This problem seems to occur with all fields inserted into a document regardless
of location (body, footer, etc). Instead of the field data (ie the page number,
time, etc) being inserted only the name of the field selected is inserted. For
example, inserting the time does not print the actual time; instead just the
words "time(fixed)" is printed.

Another odd occurrence is the correction of some fields when saving to formats
other than *.sxw. For instance, I inserted the date and time into a document.
The date and time did not appear; only the words "date(fixed)" and
"time(fixed)". I saved the document as a Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP document
then closed the document and reopened it. The time appeared correctly but the
date still read as "date(fixed)".

Whether this is a bug or a problem caused by the keyboard to chair interface
(aka me), I'd sure like to know.

Thanks in advance.

Could not reproduce on OpenOffice.org 1.1.0, compiled from source, running on
Gentoo Linux.

The most likely cause of this is that you have inadvertently turned on the
"View Fields" option. This option shows the field names in a document, as
opposed to the field values (i.e. "Date (fixed)" as opposed to "12/07/03" in
the test document included).

To toggle the "View Fields" option in OOo Writer (may or may not work for
other components):

  1. Open the View menu.
  2. Note the presence or absence of a checkmark next to the "Fields" option.
     * If the option is checked, the names of the fields will be displayed.
     * If the option is unchecked, the values of the fields will be displayed.
  3. Change the state of the checkmark by clicking on the "Fields" option.

About the second issue: It's possible (although I have no clue whether this is
the case) that the MSWord file format has no field name for "Time (fixed)",
which would explain why the filter does not allow that field to be saved as
markup but instead as a literal string value.

I'm closing the bug as INVALID because I couldn't reproduce it. However, if
the above solution doesn't work for you, I'd be happy to reopen this bug.
Just send me or utomo99 an email, or you might be able to do it yourself if
your account has that privilege.

utomo99-> If my barging in on a bug like this is in any way offensive, please
let me know; I'm kinda new to (bug|issue)zilla, and I'm not quite sure what
the rules of etiquette are just yet.

utomo > Steven :
No problem, it is good if somebody can help each other. if you find this is
invalid with good explanation, just do it.
Thanks for the help.
