Description ingenstans 2003-12-04 09:28:00 UTC
This is, I hope, a fairly simple enhancement, which would improve OOo in a
number of ways. The first would be that it gave us, at a stroke, a full-featured
outliner. At the moment, the outlining features in Writer are limited, compared
to the competition, because we can't hide paragraphs depending on their heading
level. But this faculty already exists in the Navigator, so a wide navigator
pane would have, if the text wrapped, all the facilities of the MS Word
outliner.

Secondly, when the Navigator is being used just to navigate around long,
structured documents, it often happens that the width of section names, or
bookmark names, exceeds the width of the pane, if these identifiers are long
enough to be useful. Again, if the text could wrap so that it were all legible,
we would have a large gain, for what I hope would be a very little pain.

TM->ES: Please have a look, thanks !

- Wrap the text
- Hide the paragraphs
Those are two different enhancement.
Please submit only one bug/enhancement per issue.
We can't handle multiple item issues.
Thank you for your comprehension.

Thank you for your comprehension, indeed!

The paragraphs in the Navigator can _already_ be shown and hidden. It
says that clearly in my original enhancement request, and it's obvious
if you use the thing in Writer: right click and there is a menu entry
for heading levels, as well as an icon at the top of the Navigator
window.

So I was only asking for one enhancement -- that text be wrapped --
and giving two reasons why this would be a good thing. I am reopening
so that you can consider this single enhancement. There has been a
flurry of discussion on the User list about the lack of an outlining
facility comparable to Word's, which shows that I am not the only
person who would benefit, since everything else that an outliner
needs, including the showing and hiding of paragraphs based on their
heading levels, is already built into the Navigator.

ES->BH: This issue depends on issue 3959
Comment 6 ingenstans 2004-01-04 18:26:18 UTC
I don't think this does depend on #3959 at all. One effect would be to make
#3959 less urgent; but there are quite independent benefits from this change.
These would show even in the internal work at Sun/OOo.org.

For an example, look at the standard template used within Sun to discuss
enhancement requests (such as the document setting out how to split tables in
issue 2109). Almost all of the main headings here are supported with notes
explaining how they are meant to be used. But you can't read them easily, even
in the Navigator, because the text won't wrap in a Navigator window. All you can
read is the first 30 or 50 characters, depending on the width of the window.
This makes the Navigator much less useful than it might be. So this enhancement
is useful quite independent of whether we have a Word-style outliner or not.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
