Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 22945
Cannot edit (create) nested OLE's (Equations in a drawing in a document)
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:42:07 UTC
One can easily create drawings and spreadsheets in OO with embedded equations. This is a great feature for connecting mathematical ideas to illustrative drawings or arithmetic instantiations of mathematical formula in a spreadsheet. A great feature of writer is the ability to drop into an embedded editor to work on a drawing or a spreadsheet within writer. However, if you import a spreadsheet that contains embedded OLE equations into writer, you can no longer edit the equations. Similarly, if you import a drawing into writer, you can no longer edit embedded equations. And, of course, if you create either a drawing or spreadsheet from within writer, you cannot add equations.

No, OOo was not designed to edit OLE objects inside OLE objects. This would mean an additional implementation.
It is possible to add equation to imported ole-objects by copy&paste. But after that they can no longer be edited. I think this issue is a serious drawback of OOo, especially in scientific applications.
Seems to be related to issue 7635.
