Description Unknown 2001-11-23 05:35:16 UTC
I installed OpenOffice 6.38 on Dell Inspiron 8100 running RedHat Linux 7.2. It
has RPMs installed for the Nvidia graphics running in 1600X1200 resolution.
Inspiron has 512 meg ram, 1 GHz processor, dual boot to Windows 2000
Professional. Linux is running Gnome GUI on a 7GByte partition. This is using
Intel Boot loader that is part of machine bios and Bootpart for dual boot. This
goes into boot loader for Linux which is loaded in the /boot, not the MBR.

After installing, there were no icons or shortcuts to OpenOffice programs, so I
rebooted. During shutdown, Linux comes up with segmentation fault several
times. After the reboot and loging, A message comes up with Control Panel
Crashed. Rebooting, and login, screen is just a blue background. Can click
middle mouse button and get some programs. Galion for instance crashes.

Update Linux to reinstall control panel, no help other than Galion no longer
crashes. Can open Nautilus and open /home/afore/OpenOffice.org638 and execute
soffice where it comes up with "soffice is an executable text file. Do you want
to run it, or display its contents?" I click on Run, it runs the write program.
Calc and other programs are not available.

When I go to terminal and try to do a dir on the /OpenOffice.org638, is comes
up invalid directory or file.

I done a total reinstall of RH Linux 7.2, and then OpenOffice. No Change. The
first time I was running KDE as the GUI and thought this might be the problem.
Second time, I only installed the Gnome GUI, Still the same. First time I
installed the Java 1.2 runtime module, Second time, I bypassed this.

I installed OpenOffice in Win2K on the same machine, everything works OK and I
like it. (Want to get away from Microsoft Office and Windows). Linux
installation is default RH 7.2 other than RPMS for Video card and Monitor.

Any help would be much appreciated as I would really like to use this product
in Linux to get away from Microsoft.

As far as we can see, this seems to be an issue that occurs in
combination with nvidia graphic chips. We are trying to find out
wether this is an OOo or a nvidia driver issue.

Reinstalled RH Linux 7.2, kernel 2.4.9_10, updated with latest 1.0-
2313 NVidia drivers. Installed OpenOffied 638C. First time I
restarted with KDE desktop, computer froze with continual disk ascess
before control panel installed. Killed it after about 5 minutes with
power off and pull battery. Rebooted, it was then OK except for no
menus for Calc, draw, etc.

Uninstalled 638c, installed 641b. Same problem after reboot. Had to
do a hard reboot again. Same problem, no menus or shortcuts anywhere
for OpenOffice.

The are no menu entries in KDE/Gnome for OOo (feature enhancement).
I hope that the
fix for the problems with Nvidia chips is fixed in next OOo release (but I can't
promnise).

FYI, I finally got Openoffice 641b installed where things did not get
screwed up. Upgraded the RH linux kernel to 2.4.9-13, Nvidia driver
1.0-2313, Installed the Ximian Desktop Gnome, then Installed the Java
and Openoffice. Now everything works fine. It seems the Ximian
Desktop Gnome done the trick as I had these problems with the
upgraded RH 7.2 and Nvidia drivers also.

BTW, Openoffice looks great. Getting closer to getting away from
Microsoft completely, but I still have to be able to import and
export Microsoft Office files, so this is great.
