Description Unknown 2001-11-22 02:14:17 UTC
A document with 20 screenshots in it.
Open it in a fresh OO app. Save it in a new file and images wont be saved.
Instead "Read Error" is displayed where image is supposed to be.

If you scroll the document before saving, so that OO reads and displays each
image in a document, the file is saved OK.

It seems that OO doesn't read images that aren't displayed immediatelly on a
page. That's ok for speed and quick opening, but it should save them when
asked.

It's a big problem when you have to scroll 50 pages just to get images into
memory. And I can't depend on OO. I need to be sure that what i do will be
saved.
Hope it's not much to correct...

Honestly, all this is not about "Word".

Ratko: Please comment on how the graphics got into the document. Linked or not? Where are they saved? What's their size? What
format? Maybe you can add a sample document to ease the evaluation. Thank you.

Éric: I guess we've had this "scroll or I won't save pix" thing times ago. Please have a look.

I cannot reproduce it. Pleaser add deteiled description + bug document.
Comment 3 Unknown 2002-02-15 02:34:51 UTC
I found the same problem in OpenOffice 638c and StarOffice Beta,
Windows 2000
After inserting Screenshots for a Manual, OO dropped some of them when
saving the document. No mather if it was saved to the same or a new
document. (It destroyed 3 hours of work :()
I inserted the images via clipboard. The trick of viewing all pages
did not work for me.
Only after restarting the pc it worked again for about an hour.

The document (swx) size is about 750k.

I also experienced the same problem while working on a fairly large
(30 page) document.

As a work-around, i linked the graphics instead of embeding. Using
linking, i have experienced no further problems.

I encountered the same bug in ooo 1.0 on Debian Linux (Pure Woody).
It's a nasty bug, preventing us to extensively use ooo1.0.
This bug destroied several times the work I did.
I think it depends on the act of repeated saving of documents containing lots of embedded images.
(save -> edit -> save -> edit -> save -> edit...)
If someone is interested I can help reproduce it.

Thank all for posting comments.

If someone could come up with step by step instructions on how to
reproduce this issue consistently, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you using and supporting OOo.

Unable to duplicate on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OOo 1.0.1.

I just tried to reproduce on Debian Woody, with the Debian 1.0.1
packages. All seemed OK and I could not reproduce. But maybe I took
the wrong steps when trying to reproduce, too.

I started using OO just a few weeks ago and this bug prevents me to
use it for day to day work. I'm afraid that I don't have a step by
step guide to reproduce this, but it does happen quite often (saving
always on the same file... maybe summary of bug should be changed??).

I work on a 30 page document with ~10 inserted bitmap images and 3
pasted visio drawings (pasted as Windows GDI and NOT as visio
objects). I also have a OO drawing. The drawing made with OO tools
does never have problems, only the inserted or pasted graphics as
described in the other postings.

As I 've mentioned in my previous comment, I have the same kind of
problems of "disappearing" embedded images as the reporter. Today I
have had something similar although not exactly the same. My images
disappeared with a "Read Error" in place without closing and reopeing
the document.
I had an opened document for about 24h without working on it. As soon
as I switched to the application and tried to scroll up, I saw the
missing images.
Since my last comment, the document I'm working on has now formulas,
too. These disappeared also (the OO made drawings were still in place!!).

Some more information on my configuration
Windows 2000 Server
OO 1.0
File stored on Network Mapped Drive (maybe this is the problem??)
~40 pages document
~13 images
3 formulars
1 OO drawing (no problem with this)
Comment 11 stefos 2002-10-18 11:56:16 UTC
Aaa....I forgot to say that when I closed the document (which I hadn't
touched for a long time) with the missing images and opened it again,
the images were intact!!!

So maybe the problem is not that the images disappear when opening a
document, but they disappear while working on a document. If the user
saves this document (the user does not know that it has problems
because the page he works on does not have images) the document get's
saved with missing images.

Stefos, could you please post the file that you use to consistently
reproduce this error?

We need either a file or step by step instructions on how to
reproduce this error.

Thanks.
Comment 13 stefos 2002-10-28 09:52:28 UTC
I may have been misunderstood in my previous postings... I can't
reproduce the problem. It just happens occasionally.

But I have come to the following conclusions:
1) while working on a document with embedded images (pasted or
inserted graphics, NOT OO-drawn) it happens that OO can't read them
from the document file. It displays instead of them a "Read Error"
message, preserving the original images dimensions.
2) If I save the file after this happens (because there is no error
message-popup and so I haven't noticed it) the document get's saved
without the pictures.

I have the impression that the fact that the document is on a network
mapped drive (windows) plays a role in this issue.

I made the following experiment which _reproduces_ _partly_ the issue:
1) create a document with some pages of text and embedded images
2) save the document on a network drive from a page where no images
are embedded
3) open the document.
4) unplug you network cable
5) try to scroll to the image sections. OO tries to load the images
from the file, but because there is no net connection it can't
6) NO ERROR MESSAGE is displayed, but instead of the pictures there is
the "Read Error" message. If I would't scroll, I wouldn't notice anything

I said that this partly reproduces the issue because when I plug in
again the network, I can't save the file on it's original location.

BUT, let's suppose that the network isn't totally unpluged, but there
is temporary high traffic or loss of connection. Could it happen that
this causes the entire issue????

works for me with build 643

1) Start OO
2) File/Open .. attachment #1 [details] [2002-02-14-MS-Query-Handbuch11.sxw]
3) OO loads document, jumps to page 21/27, no missing graphics
4) Scrolling through the document: graphics are presented correctly

OO.o word doc with images
Comment 16 Unknown 2003-02-14 03:24:35 UTC
Version: 643C
Platform: Linux Red Hat 8.0 Metacity

Description

When saving a file with multiple images as a Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP
doc, only the first image is saved. The rest are not and are not shown
when the document is re-read from the disk. Saving the file in OO.o
format results in the document being saved correctly. The images are
embedded and were originally produced by MS Word.

Attached is a file to repro this problem (previous coments - this web
interface didn't do both at once!)

Steps to repro:

[1] Open the attached file
[2] Save as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP format.
[3] Reload the document or close OO.o and reopen the file

Result: only the first image is shown - all other images are blank.
Expected Result: all images should be shown.

Michael, could you please take a look at this one? Thanks.
Comment 18 michael.ruess 2003-03-06 16:33:12 UTC
Yes, I can reproduce it with OpenOffice 643C. But this is already
fixed with 644 respective OpenOffice 1.1 Beta.
Comment 19 michael.ruess 2003-03-06 16:35:38 UTC
The original Problem (graphics lost when saving an sxw) should be gone
with OpenOffice 1.0.2.
