Description capstone737 2003-11-10 02:26:53 UTC
This is just some feedback. I am frustrated that I have no suggestions to offer,
other that completely cloning the MSO appearance :-(

I have been trying to get OOo into my workplace, and while there are still some
MSO compatibility issues, I have found that for the average user the switch from
MSO is a large one. Of consideration is the inefficiency costs while the staff
learn the new software, and their frustration level because of lack of
familiarity with OOo.

Now, this is not a problem for me as I have been in IT since 1983. But it is a
problem for many of our staff who have ONLY used MS Office and are not very
adept at finding their way around a new package.

I have just found this statement in a story published on The Register at
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/33867.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought I would investigate the use of Open Source software on my personal
computer at home. I got a licence, free of charge, but after three hours of
struggling to retrain myself from many years of using Microsoft, I abandoned it.
On a sample of one, me personally, it was more cost effective to stay with
Microsoft. Those arguments, when magnified across the whole public sector, may
well sway the balance against the Open Source software.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know that the OOo team have tried to make it MS-friendly but still it is
difficult for many of the staff. In trying to overcome this, I have been trying
to source some quality training for OOo but so far have not been able to find
anything available close to where we operate in Brisbane, Australia.

Regards,
Brad

sorry for this. but i think this is also a matter of usability. for
users that are not firm with ms products, OOo is more intuitive and
faster to lern than any product of the competitors and i, for my
personal opinion, think it is also fast to lern for any user of other
office products if you only try to go back to their beginnings, where
they allways asked: why should i look at file -> page to format a page
and not at format -> page as example. i hope you find someone making
training lessons for our good produkt.
