Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 22268
External links causes sheets to be miscounted
Last modified: 2006-02-16 11:46:51 UTC
When opening files from OO.o 1.0.1 which contain links to external files, file opening and saving was horribly erratic and mostly didn't work properly. This makes 1.1.0 unusable for me. I noticed that those files containing external links reported a wrong number of total sheets in the status bar. I suspect this is related to my open/save problems from trying files without external links. To reproduce the misreporting, and rule out cross-version problems, create a file with any value in a cell and save it. Create a new file (status reports sheet 1/3). Then add a reference to the cell in the first file which causes status to report 1/4. I hope that my open/save problem has the same cause as this (apparently trivial) bug because I can't send you my real spreadsheets and sanitising them could be tricky.
Hi, the numbers of Sheets is correct if you enter a link to an external value. This Value is stored on a hidden Sheet for caching the data. It's the same mechanism as in Excel but they do not inform you about that. If this is all you're facing I've to close this Issue as Worksforme. If you have trouble to get the correct values from the linked documents, maybe the links are broken. Have a look under Edit Links. If no more information is given especially some documents (Master and linked) there is no chance for me to reproduce the problem you're facing. I've tried it but with no luck. So please try to re-create such files and attach them to this Issue. Frank
Frank, OK, I've had another look at this: 1. I now see that 1.0.1 also reports the same number of sheets which I'd never noticed before <grin> 2. I've worked out what is really causing my load/save/problems. When I copied a set of files to my test box, I put them into a different directory. Not only were the linked files not there, but the directories they used to be in weren't either. Opening a file took over 3 hours (I went to eat something) and saving it took around 10 minutes. Both on a PII 300MHz, 96M RAM so not the fastest but even so.... 3. Checking out links further: this file has 8 "real" sheets, 91 sheets reported in the status line and 21 links shown in the links dialog. Why the discrepancy? Testing further with the simple files as my original report: 4. Deleting the linked file and then the directory it was in still left the linking file opening sensibly. I'm a bit worried I can't reproduce this with simple files but I don't fancy spending 3 hours odd per test. 5. Changing the linking formula to one without a link left 4 sheets reported (3 "real" ones) as did breaking the link. This is the one problem I can reproduce with simple files. Hope this is more helpful, George.
Hi, 1.) Fine. ;-) 2.) This is why the document opens so slow. All the broken links should be resolved by OOo and also the file open functionality. This is addressed by an sun internal bugtracking system. 3.) The difference comes IMHO from the broken and/or removed links. Such Sheets are still in the file even if you brake the links. OOo can't determine how this sheets can be erased from the file and not harming the functionality of the document itself. So it's up to you to kill such sheets manually. To do so, just go to Format Sheet Show and select all hidden sheets. Delete the unwanted/not needed according to your link list. You can see what sheet can be erased because the sheet name reflects the filename and the position the link goes to. After erasing all unwanted sheets just hide the other ones. 4. and 5.) It's related to Issue 15667 which is an enhancement request and currently addressed for OOo2.0. After all I think I close this one as double because the many tables seems to be a problem addresed in Issue 15667. Thanks for your cooperation.
