Issue still exists in 3.0.0 beta.
You cannot highlight text in a text box (highlight button is grayed off). 
In addition, if you copy & paste highlighted text into a text box, it loses the
highlighting.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements". 

I intermittently lose the ability to highlight text.  If I open a new window, I 
will be able to highlight, but not in my main document.  Could it be related to 
the length of my main document--about 62,000 words?

I was able to replicate this issue in OOo version 3.4.1 on a Mac Mini running OSX 10.7.5

Here are the steps I took to replicate the issue
1.Open OOo and start a new text document
2.Type a sentence, drag cursor over sentence and click the highlight icon
3.Verified sentence highlighted as expected
4.Selected the Text box icon and created text box in my document
5.Typed a sentence in the text box
6.Highlight icon is disabled, I have no way to highlight the text in the textbox (attached screenshot)
7.Attempted to copy paste highlighted text from step2 into text box
8.Text pasted but was not highlighted

I compared this to MS Word 2010 and I was able to highlight text in a textbox in Word 2010 (attached screenshot)

I ran a few follow up tests.  I attempted to apply font color change, bold, italics and underline to the text inside the textbox.
Icons for all these attribute changes were enabled and I was able to successfully apply all these change to the text inside the textbox

I confirmed the bug using AOO 4.0 and Windows 8 x64.
