Description jlueters 2003-11-02 16:45:19 UTC
The debian openoffice.org l10n-de package does not conatin the wizard/bitmap
directory.
Trying to start the formular wizard leads to an error.

A error dialog is popping up and does complain that it can not find a missing
file. Unfortunatly the error dialog does not give any information about the
missing file in detail (path). The given information is more or less useless.
This behaviour does make error tracking painful and slow, as it requires to
start openoffice under strace control in order to find the failing operation.

Please fix the error dialog and provide the missing path.

Regards
Jürgen

hi jlueters,

thanks for using and supporting OpenOffice...

Since you're not using the official OpenOffice.org installation file we are not
able to hlp you with this problem...

Debian is building it's own packages ( the *.deb files)...

==> please ask the debian maintainer for the OpenOffice packages what went
    wrong...

closing...

Hi,

Sorry, this closing is bogus.

Although the problem with the file probably is Debian-specific, the wish for
enhancing the error dialog _is not_.

haggai->mci: Rene & I are the Debian maintainers. Feel free to reassign to me
or add us on the CC if you think something relates to the Debian packagers.

In this case, Juergen said the missing files are caused by the packaging, but
the error message is not Debian-specific and other users could get the same
error if there is a problem with their install.

Confirming issue. To reproduce, delete the directory
/path/to/openoffice/share/template/<language>/wizard/bitmap and then click
File->Autopilot->Forms

The directory
/path/to/openoffice/share/template/<language>/wizard/bitmap
is an integral part of an OpenOffice.org installation and must not be omitted by
the installation process. The only other reason for its absence would be a
manual deletion which we generally do not cover by error messages. After all you
cannot expect a software package to run if you manually deleted some directories
in it. So I will not fix it. If the Debian package is corrected no one will have
a problem.

The closing comment is offtopic.

This case is dealing about a error/message box. The debian packaging issue has
triggered the error/message box issue, only. The initially mentioned
error/message box is not doing what it is expected to do. The error/message box
has a defect. The defect is the missing information about the discovered
problem. (costs me about a hour to get the missing file with strace)

From my point of view there are the following choices:
    - give detailed information (path in our case ) in a gui-box
    - write all error messages and warnings in a system/aspplication log
    - do both.
Openoffice.org instead gives the information "something with opening files went
wrong". That has to be corrected.

You (tv) are kidding with "if everything is ok there is no problem", aren't you?

Ah, now I understand your problem. If there is an error message complaining
about something missing, it should complain about the correct component missing.
OK, we will fix that for the next version.

assigned to bc, who is maintainer of the wizards that produce the error box.

Basiccally we decided some time ago that the current behaviour is correct and
the user should be prompted to run the repair setup to solve the problem without
caring about the exact reason:
However I can offer some improvements about this issue:
1) Missing template paths: see #i25951#
2) As bitmaps will be part of the new resource API the bitmaps for the wizards
will no longer linger around in the wizards/bitmap, but be an integral part of
the office installation. Therefor it should be guaranteed that "repair -set up"
should also repair these missing resources. As soon as we will have adapted our
wizards bitmaps to the new API I will set this bug to "Fixed", too.

For reasons of statistic I set the priority to P4 as there is a mere dependency
to another task which fix also automatically fixes this bug
