Request for enhancement:
  Feature similar to MS Word AutoShapes -- if I enter --> or <-- it should
automatically be converted to a solid arrow, :-) should automatically be
converted to a smiley face, etc.

I think this should be extended to allow for the inclusion of an
"AutoShapes" gallery present in all core applications. This includes
arrows, geometric shapes, MS Office-type callouts, etc. Many users
rely on these built-in shapes which are much easier to use than
drawing objects from scratch and more versatile than clip-art. This
would also improve MS Office files that expect these shapes.

The Issue you raised is currently 'Unconfirmed' pending review, but has not been
updated within the last 3 years. Please consider re-testing with one of the
latest versions of OOo, as the problem(s) may have already been addressed.
Either use the recent stable version: http://download.openoffice.org/index.html
or consider trying the new OOo 3 BETA (still in testing):
