Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 21524
Flashing white lines on screen when entering text in a text box quickly or outside of slide.
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:21:02 UTC
This issue causes white lines to flash across the screen when doing various operations with a text box. These white lines are particularly dangerous to someone who is epileptic and using the software, as the flashing white lines *might* trigger an epileptic attack. There are many various ways to replicate the white lines, the most prominant ive found is the following: 1 Create a text box of a small width 2 Insert many lines into the box so that the box goes off the slide and beyond the bottom of the workspace. 3 Hold down the backspace key, as if not satisfied with the paragraph you just wrote and are going to start from scratch. Result: Many white lines will flash either inside the text box, or if you went off the workspace, all over the screen.
Reassigned to Christian.
set to new and change the target
Created attachment 10582 [details] flashes while editing text
I can reproduce the bug. I attached a document to reproduce the bug. Delete the b and enter the b again. A workaround for this is to switch off 'Fit width to text' and/or 'fit height to text' in 'Format/Text'
can we fix this without double buffering? Its not flashing that much on my machine, 1Ghz P4 with a Matrox G550

This issue is still not resolved in OO 1.1.4 under Windows. I successfully replicated this defect. The instruction given in the first comment are not too clear. User has to open a Presentation application. Then insert a text field and hold down any character key. Once the text will “run off†the slide, the white flashes will appear in the background of the slide as well as within the area of the text field on every stroke of a key. However, I performed more follow up testing. If the user simply attempts to copy and paste extremely large text into text field, there is no occurrence of flashing white lines neither in the background of the slide nor in the text field area itself.
I successfully replicated the bug on Windows XP Service Pack 2, OOo 1.1.5. The replication sequence in the description is in the simplest form.
Using the attached file I was able to reproduce this bug as the text box seems to be refreshing whenever the end of line is reached. I am using Version 3.1.1 OOO310m19 (Build:9420) running Windows Vista-64 SP1.
I was able to replicate this bug. The steps followed where similar to post. Steps: 1. Create a small text box of specific size. 2. Insert as many lines such that text goes beyond the workspace. 3. Now press back space as if you need to start from scratch. 4. Text Box refreshes whenever you reach end of line. I have tested this on the file attached with this report. When we open the file attached with the report and try to go delete all character by pressing back space key. We see white lines flashing for the text which has gone outside the text box. Also I would like to state that, I copied a large paragraph into the text box. When I tried to repeat procedure for replicating the bug I was not able to do so. System Configuration on which I replicated this bug: Operating System: Windows Vista, XP. Ram: 3 GB Open Office Impress version: OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, OOO310m19 (Build: 9420)
Looks like an edit engine problem and tl is now in charge.
(Jon Sligh 9/17/2009) Replicated issue in OOo 3.1 [OOO310m19 (Build 9420)] on Windows Vista SP 1. Steps to reproduce in a simpler fashion: 1.) Open Impress 2.) Hit the enter key until the text box grows past the size of the slide. 3.) Hit return to create a new line in the text box outside of slide 4.) Hit backspace to remove the new line The repeated process of adding a new line and deleting that new line causes the entire text box to flash. This could occur over and over as users paste text very large text from another source into a presentation and edit the text. This issue could cause a headache or something more serious for some people. Most often it will just be an annoyance for users.
