Description guido.pinkernell 2003-10-21 13:01:17 UTC

That´s Question Nr. 002 on
http://documentation.openoffice.org/user_faq/word_processing/002.html

I asked Guido,
I haven't been following this discussion closely, but I have now
looked at the FAQ and your bug report, and I don't see what the
problem is with the instructions in the FAQ.

Guido answered,
It says to choose the *First* Page Style for the page *following* the
first page. My corrections suggest to choose the First Page Style for
the first page, and the Default Page Style for the following pages.

My reply,
Ah, I see what you are getting at, but I don't use the Default Page
Style for anything. I use a Title Page style for the title page, a
Copyright Page style for the second page, the First Page style for
the page that's going to be numbered "1", and Left and Right Page
styles for pages following that. And I'm sure many other people have
other combinations of page styles, so telling someone to use the
Default page style could be just as confusing or misleading as the
instructions that are in the FAQ now.

I suggest a better wording would say something about "whatever page
style you want for the page that's going to be numbered 1" -- that's
really badly worded but is the general idea.

Well, you don´t *need* to choose Default. Just as it´s said in the
FAQ: "Pick one from the menue".

> Select the button next to "Page Break". Then choose the style to use
> for the next page (pick one from the menu - such as "First Page").
                                              ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
But from all styles that are shown there, don´t choose First Page.
If the FAQ wants to make a suggestion, it shouldn´t suggest the only
one that makes no sense.

Same applies to the rest of my corrections.

Guido,
Okay, I see your point better now. Especially since the default for
the "First Page" style is "followed by First Page" instead of
something logical like "followed by Left Page" -- so people are likely
to get stuck in First Page through the whole document. So I don't mind
your change.

Another possible problem with that FAQ item, that you didn't mention:
it talks about breaking a document into "sections". I wonder if this
use of the term "section" will confuse readers later, because OOo's
real sections are quite different.

Other than the usual practice of QA I set my own Issue to New. I need
this changed as soon as possible since questions on users mailing
lists regarding page numbering keep coming in. I don´t want to retype
the same answer over and over again while there´s a very good help
text in the FAQs available, which only needs simple changes.

Please fix.
