Description Unknown 2001-11-05 20:52:04 UTC
Toshiba Tecra 8100
S3 Savage MX video
Linux 2.4.7 and 2.4.9
Red Hat 7.1 and 7.2 Standard Gnome Install
Ximian Gnome Install

The installation of 638c Hangs the system and begins to slowly fill the screen
with garbage, until you have to exit to an alternative tty and kill the X session.

This is the only problem that appears with this application

Hi, reassigning to sander.

I just tested the install on the machine next to me (desktop machine
with an ATI Rage 128 RL) and it works just fine.

It appears to be an issue with the video card (linux identifies it as
an S3 Savage MX/IX) and the animated icons used on the inital screen
of the install -- sliding OpenOffice logo, etc.

Works under Win2K on the same laptop.

Let me know if I can provide more info, but it strikes me as a driver
problem with this card, not with your code.

Looks like the graphics chipset was the key! From the related Redhat case 31879:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=31879 Setting SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50=true "fixes" the problem. Thanks! Hopefully others will benefit from this in the archives.
I think this could help.

Ok, I have two words for the team:

YOU ROCK!

Setting environment variable immediately resolve the issue with the S#
Savage MX chipset.

Just FYI, I am using the new XFree86 4.1.0-3 from RedHat that
supposedly has the "fixed" S3 driver.

As you say, may be a good thing to add to a pre-installation readme file.

Thanks again,
Stephen

I'll request to add this issue to the README. As it is a bug in the
XServer I can't fix it.

As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved duplicate
issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is
unfortunately to set them to verified.
