Description Frank Schönheit 2001-11-05 10:24:38 UTC
In the most recent past, I often get mails from Issuezilla (issues@openoffice.org) containing an invalid address (INVALID ADDRESS@.SYNTAX
ERROR) in the cc field.

For instance, this happened for two changes I did to issue 1881 and issue 1975 today (05th Nov. 2001).
For #1975, I got two mails: one to issues@dba.openoffice.org (where I'm subscribed to), and one to fs@openoffice.org (which is my OOo
account). Both came from issues@openoffice.org, and both contained the above-mentioned invalid e-mail address in the cc.

Reassigning all of kat's open issues to support so that I can go through them.

Looking into this. Frank, have you seen this again since the times
you mention in this issue?
Comment 5 Frank Schönheit 2002-01-16 07:26:17 UTC
Actually, the mail I got notifying me of your question added to this
issue had a "cc:INVALID ADDRESS@.SYNTAX ERROR".
So the answer is yes :)

Looking at the 65 issuezilla mails I got this year (mostly in the the
dba area), 2 are correct, 1 contains the invalid address in "to", and
62 in "cc".

If it would help you in your investigations I could supply you these
mails (though I'd have to search for the mail export feature of SO
5.2 first :).

Subscribed to issues@dba.openoffice.org, issues@api.openoffice.org and
issues@openoffice.org in order to confirm receipt of
invalidaddress@.syntax.error in cc line.
Comment 7 Unknown 2002-01-29 20:18:49 UTC
Haven't received any e-mail with invalid address in the cc line yet.
Frank, could you provide some of the issue numbers corresponding to
these e-mails?
Thanks,

Frank,
Actually, it may be better if you could just forward a couple of the
e-mails to me at kristen@collab.net
Thanks,

arghhh ....

Kristen,

As I'm currently migrating to a new mail client (from SO 5.2 to
Mozilla), I tried to use Mozilla to forward such invalid mails to you.
Surprisingly, in Mozilla I don't see these invalid addresses.

Looking at the plain text exported by Mozilla, the message contains a
line consisting of "Cc: " (an Cc, a colon, and a space). This
obviously provokes this INVALID stuff in SO 5.2, so at least a part of
the issue is caused by SO 5.2
It seems that nearly all messages I get from OOo do contain this empty
CC, while other messages I get from other sources don't.

I'm not sure if this is only a client issue. Don't know if this empty
CC is allowed or not. If not, it seems to be at least a (minor)
problem at OOo.

Anyway, I apologize for making that much trouble :( for nearly nothing.
I would have no problem with closing this issue, if you say that this
empty CC is not worth beeing tracked.

Hmm, this is very interesting.... I would be interested in checking
with someone who knows the email spec.

Frank,
No problem. :) We'd still like to look into this at some point- moving
the priority down to P5.
Thanks,
Kristen

I spoke to our email specialist, and we looked a bit in the RFC
(RFC822, if you're interested). It's not completely clear from the
RFC whether "empty" cc: lines are permitted, but common practice is
for mail clients to accept these (I send them out a lot, and and have
never heard anyone comment on it). I would recommend submitting an
issue with the StarOffice folks. Thanks for submitting this, though-
it was an interesting investigation! :)
Comment 13 Frank Schönheit 2002-02-01 06:50:01 UTC
I deny myself from submitting an issue for SO 5.2 - everytime I say "I
want the mail/news client back" here inhouse (we dropped it for 6.0),
I very tight evade beeing shot for this :)

(fs@openoffice.org is an alias for frank.schoenheit@sun.com :))
