Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 21126
Spell Check Grossly inefficiant
Last modified: 2013-02-24 20:34:27 UTC
Hello. I'm not sure if this is my problem or just a problem with the code but I have not had much success with the spell check that is included with OOo. I frequently have to have m-w.com open so I can check my spelling there. If it's something I'm doing wrong, can you please direct me to how to fix it? I have not been successful in my searches on line. Have you guys considered applying the aspell code? thanks!
Hi, Sohmc: I'm afraid the description of the problem you are having doesn't help find a way to solve it. Please provide more information -- are you doing a spell check on the document but obviously misspelled words are missed? This could be related to your language settings. Also, you are using a very old version of OOo. The latest is 1.1. I would suggest you upgrade. Please provide more information so we can get you set up properly. Thanks, Tam
Hi, Unfortunately aspell will not support manty langauges that need affix compression and it won't build cross-platform, and we evaluated it once and found it lacking (not thread safe, not cross-platform, overly complex for the job it had to do, and we could not license it under SISSL anyway. Now that the spell checker has added replacement tables for common phonetic mistakes and n-gram based suggestions for very poorly spelled words (both present in OOo 1.1, you should see a huge improvement in the quality of suggestions, if that is your main complaint. But in order to understand why you are unhappy I need to know a few things: 1. What language are you spell checking in (en_US or something else) 2. if not en_US did you install the extra dictionary properly? 3. What is the default and active language attribute of the text you are trying to spellcheck? 4. Please descibe in more detail the problem you are seeing and how I go about recreating it on my own machine. Thanks, Kevin lingucomponent project lead ps. I am moving this issue to lingucomponent for tracking purposes. Kevin
