Add more 'connection pointsÂ’ to ellipse shape for drawing (UML) state-diagrams
Last modified: 2003-10-12 11:30:06 UTC
Currently, the ellipse shape in Draw offers only 4 'connection points' (points to which a curve shape can connect). These points are at the north, south, east, and west extremities of the ellipse. However, when drawing state-diagrams (suddenly fashionable with UML!), a complex diagram appears a little cluttered because each ellipse (i.e., state) provides only 4 points to connect curved arrow-lines (i.e., state-transition lines). The angle of the bow of the line is also a little odd (not so rounded). Also, it is not possible to represent a state-transition back to the same state (a line which exits a state and re-enters the same state at the same or a nearby point on the ellipse). Business requirement: Add more points to the ellipse shape so that (UML) state-diagrams appear clearer, especially when drawing complex diagrams with many transitions to and from a given state. Also, allow a curved line to begin and end on the same connection point to represent the reflexive state-transition. Proposal: Add at least north-east (at 0+45 degrees), south-east (at 90+45), south-west (180+45), and north-west (270+45), or more such points, to give the user more choices of connection points around the ellipse. Or, add a special 'state' shape and a special 'state-transition' arrow just for drawing state-diagrams. (Another possibility might be to add a special UML palette to the side-bar with all the shapes needed to draw state-transition diagrams.

Please make the "option bar " visible . Here you have the ability to activate the "glue point" modus where you can add as many connection points as you like. Refer to the help files to see how this is done. Thanks for using OpenOffice!
