On the initial install (network install in /opt) I received numerous errors
about basic/script.xlc being not found when trying to create a new letter using
the wizard; I re-ran the user-space setup and basic/script.xlc did appear, but
now I get similar errors saying that dialog.xpi is missing -- this occurs while
using the letter wizard and again when saving the document.

Please read
http://documentation.openoffice.org/setup_guide/index.html. Give a
detailed walkthrough of your installation. Have you had any error
messages while installation?
I've tried to reproduce with OOo 1.1.0 on Suse 8.2: No problem.
