Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 20972
Import of excel file with a graph doesn't render correctly
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:12:27 UTC
The attached file should contain a list of people names and dates, and an automatically generated graph of a circle with the list of people around it. There are 4 similar data sheets in the file. The names are in Hebrew. Loading the file in OpenOffice 1.1.0 doesn't show anything from the lists or the graph. I tried this on Debian Sid with openoffice.org 1.1.0-1 on AMD Athlon, kernel 2.4.22.

Hi, I can't reproduce the problem you're facing if I simply open the document and answer the question for updating the links with No. If I select yes, the chart will be empty. This is because the linked document which contains the data is not at the correct place (maybe on your computer it's because the path to the file contains spaces which AFAIK will not work on Linux boxes). Have you selected to update Links always under tools options spreadsheet General updating ? If so, this in conjunction with a missing linked document is causing the disapperance of the chart data. Please drop a comment if your problem is solved by following my suggestions. Frank
I tried it again, this time I saved the file without space in the filename. When opening the file (through the quicklaunch under KDE) I get the "should I update the links" and answer "No" as before. Now instead of empty sheets I get broken graphs: 1. The left-most and the right-most sheets just show colored pie-charts, no labels around them. 2. The two central charts look much closer to what they should look like except that a scanned image (the club's emblem) which should appear in the center of the circle is missing (I don't mind about it right now), and the labels contain only the people's names, without the dates (the dates are essential). I can't get a screenshot of what it should look like on Windows right now because the Windows box I have at home is Windows 98 with bad Hebrew support. I'll try to get a screenshot of what it should look like from my Windows XP at work on Sunday. Thanks, Amos
I can Reproduce the problem on OpenOffice 1.1 (default Install, US), Win XP Pro Sp1. (And MS Office XP Sp2). It is real problem open the xls in OOo, and you will find the graph different to MS Office show it . Change OS to all, reproduceable in Windows XP

Hi daniel, can you have a look at this please ? Excel shows some shapes and a logo on all charts. Frank
I will look at this.
accepted. I will try and get a handle on this. I will ignore the embedded graphic object in the charts as we don't support this currently. But I would like to understand why chart 1 and chart 4 do not display anywhere near as good as chart 2 and chart 3 and why does chart 2 and chart 3 not display the dates as well as the names in the data labels.
A preliminary report on this: 1. The Chart engine does not support showing data label text from more than one column, thus I presume the people's names are in the first column and the dates in the adjacent column. Calc is only displaying the text from the first column. To workaround this you would need to append both as a string into one cell. Alternatively if the dates are important then only specify the dates as your data category. 2. The Chart on sheet1 will appear if you simply right-click on the pie and select "Modify Data Range" and simply click on "Create". 3. The Chart on sheet4 appears with no text for the data labels. You can verify this by clicking on a pie data point and seeing that for each data point, the "show label text" for the data label property is not enabled for any of the data points. I will investigate this further to see why this is not enabled for this chart.
set the target
I will leave this as a placeholder to test against teh new chart engine. resetting the target.
I have graph problems with much simpler documents. I will attach a sample file and screenshots below. I create an XLS file with two columns of numerical data (X-data in column "A", Y-data in column "B"). I create an X-Y graph (using default settings). If I save the file at this stage and open in OO.o, the graph is slightly different (different title and shading) but acceptable. In Excel, if I move the data columns so that the "y" data is to the left of the "x" data (X-data in column "C", Y-data in column "B"), the graph doesn't change. Again, I save it and open the file in OO.o. The graph is completely different - the axes are transposed. The attached file and screenshots are of the file in this state. The file was generated using OO.o 1.1.1 and MSOffice XP under Windows 2000. I have had similar problems using OO.o 1.1.1 under various Linux distros and Win2k, and MSOffice '97 under Win2k, at home.
