I can Reproduce the problem on 
OpenOffice 1.1 (default Install, US), Win XP Pro Sp1. 
(And MS Office XP Sp2). 
It is real problem

we cannot open one page MS doc file

The crash is fixed for OO 2.0 (I tested is with an internal build).
But the document will not look as in Word, due to conceptional
differencies in Word and OO Writer (the document contains loads of
tracked changes in tables and graphics) . These are all adressed in
other issueus.
