Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 20635
Ease of upgrade
Last modified: 2003-10-06 11:42:06 UTC
I first installed 1.1 RC5, then downloaded 1.1 Final a few days later and tried to upgrade by installing the new version. 1. The installation detected the earlier version but did not ask me "Do you want to upgrade to this version?". It forced me to go and uninstall the earlier version. The upgrade should happen without requiring the user to manually uninstall. 2. There is no "Uninstall" program listed under OpenOffice under the Start menu. Independently of the upgrade issue mentioned above, it should be possible for a user to uninstall OpenOffice at any time by navigating from the Start menu: Start -> OpenOffice -> Uninstall The uninstall functionality is hidden inside the setup.exe (and not the setup.exe in the installation directory, but inside the C:\Program Files\OpenOffice directory. This is horribly unintuitive. Yes, the helpful error message I got when I tried to install the later version told me to uninstall using the setup program in the "local" directory, but what does a user understand from that? 3. During the uninstall, there's a very scary message that says in effect, "The uninstall program will only remove the program from your system, but will not delete any files or any documents you have created". It then gives the user an option to "Delete files". The user does not know if the uninstall is now going to delete documents created by them! The message should be clearer. Other than these cosmetic issues, this is an awesome product! Congratulations! Regards, Ganesh Prasad
1: RC5 is not an earlier version of 1.1.0, it's the same version. 2: Uninstall information is not allowed in the start menu by MS style guide, it has to be in the control panel - software. BTW: OOo has nerver been able to update similar versions. For this enhancement we have related issues. For OOo 2.0 we will change to native installers. This will provide more more possibilities for the setup feature.
For 1.1.x we won't have any fixes like this. For OOo 2.0 we will change setup completely.
