Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 20608
Installer forces .kde and .gnome writing, almost 1MO wasted
Last modified: 2003-10-06 11:39:59 UTC
I do not use and refuses to use kde nor gnome. Thus I have .gnome and .kde unwritable directories in my home dir. OOo installer is unusable in this configuration continuously asking to click for confirming I refuse writing there. Trying to launch setup after removing thiose unxirtable directopries I fins 904 Kb in .kde and 44 in .gnome. Installer should *not* force usere to accept such a wait, imagine if I were near my quota ? 950 Kb is *huge* for unwanted files. Installer should write this ONLY for user of those environments, therefore : not creating the directory, or siulently discarding writes to them if they are unwritable.
Hi, Most Linux users want kde or gnome integration. If you do not, simply DISABLE it by doing a custom installation. See the setup-guide.pdf for more info on how to enable a custom instalaltion. Hope this helps, Kevin
I doubt *most* unix user want both. Then the bug is that this setup_guide.pdf is not even mentionned in the installatioin instructions. And putting more than 900 Kb in a user directory without him knowing it is form of DOS. PS : set -h does *not* mention custom installation at all, the setup_guide is *noit mentionned on werb page.
In times of 160 MB low cost hard drives it's hard to belive that you are reaching your quota if you use 1 MB more or less. Your problem iis eay to workaround: Choose use defined installtion type and deselect the Gnome and KDE modules. Setup -h shows only setup parameters. Setup_guide is part of the installation files. Be ashured that we won't change the behaviour for OOo 1.1.0. Most user use KDE or/and Gnome. Setup can't know which one is the prefered one. For OOo 2.0 we will have the native installer for linux with a general systemwide integration.
setup could at least not open a dialog box for each and every file it tries to write in it if directoprys are *not* writable. I'll continue to consider this as a bug. And installation instructions could *mention* the existence of setup_guide. doing a ls on the hundreds of unorganised files in OOo install dir is not a valid option. And I note that for OOo, people not using a windows like interface are shit.
"And I note that for OOo, people not using a windows like interface are shit." What should be the deep thought of this sentence?
