Description magrawal 2003-09-29 21:00:13 UTC
I am attaching 2 spreadsheets, one in Excel and 1 in Calc. I wanted to work on
this spreadsheet in Calc. The problem is that all the data in the body of the
spreadsheet has 6 decimal places but Calc rounds them to 2 decimal places for
display. When I format the Default cell style to show 6 decimal places for
numbers, it adds 6 zeros even for whole numbers in columns A and C.

Ideally, Calc should be smart enough to round off leading zeros in whole numbers
and trailing zeros in decimals.

Hi,

have you tried to set the number of decimal places under tools options
spreadsheet calculate to the number you want ?

It should work.

Please try and drop in a comment to this Issue, so we can decide to
close it or send it to the feature guys.

Thanks, but actually no. It does not work.

What I am trying to do is simple. I create a spreadsheet and enter
some numbers. Say 10,20,30 in column A and 0.000045, 0.006789, 0.
0000012 in column B. I would like the numbers to be displayed as:

10 0.000045

20 0.006789

30 0.0000012

But (at least until RC4), calc will display these numbers either as
10,20,30 and 0,0,0 or, if the decimal places are set to 6, as 10.
000000, 20.000000, 30.000000 and 0.000045, 0.006789, 0.000001.

I know that Calc does retain the full number internally, but I think
it helps if the numbers are also displayed "intelligently".

Ok, I've missed something. Here comes how it goes.

1. Go to Tools Options Spreadsheet Calculate and set the number of
decimal places to 6.

2. Open the Stylist (F11) and select the default cell style.

3. Select Modify from the context menu.

4. Go to the Numbers Tabpage and select standard in the format field.

5. Close the dialog and if you want the Stylist.

As you should see, the format of the numbers has changed.

Sorry for the delay and thanks very much for the earlier set of
instructions. I would like to suggest that Calc should demonstrate the
end result of these instructions as the default behavior, without user
intervention. All that is basically asked is for the default cell
style to have the general number format instead of a decimal number
format that is based on Tools -> Spreadsheet -> Calculate -> Decimals.

Hi,

that's not what most of the users want. So I close this one as wontfix.

Sorry for no better reply.
