Description adfernandes 2003-09-26 16:09:14 UTC
When the document page size is larger than the print device's physical media,
OOo's printing subsystem gives you the option to posterize the print.

However, in the device output (either specific or generic printer), the
posterized pages have several problems:

1) they assume that the printing device can image to the very edge of the paper,

2) even assuming that the printer can print right up to the paper edge, parts of
the poster are still missing (like there is a missing strip between poster pages),

3) there is no option for having each page overlap by a small bit, nor can crop
marks be printed.

One possibility has been to just print the document to one physical page
(shrinking to fit) and then use KDE's "poster" program to posterize the output.
However, the poster program is incompatible with the postscript produced by OOo
(for whatever reason), even after running OOo's postscript through ps2ps or
ps2eps. (What you get out is a set of overlayed pages that cannnot be imaged
properly either through gsview or any physical print device - I've tried several
laserjets and inkjets).

this looks like an rfe. however posterizing is not part of the
printing subsystem so please have a look at it.

This can be reproduced. The third column is completely missing.

Reassigned to Christian. Please have a look. Thanks.

One more comment -

Under oodraw, File/Print/Options/Page_Options - one of the selections
is "Tile". According to the Help file, "tile" seems to be the same as
"posterize"... but it doesn't seem to do anything.

In other words, there is no noticable difference in behavior between
"default" and "tile" settings when printing a page larger than
physical media. You still get the "shrink to page / posterize / trim
to fit" option when printing under either setting, and the output
under both cases is exactly the same no matter which of the three you
select.

It seems to me that this is kinda' a second "posterize" option that
doesn't seem to do anything... (either that, or my ignorance is bigger
than I thought...) :-)

Other than that, the printing subsystem gives *very* nice output, I
have to say. I just wish I could afford a 48" strip printer for my
posters... :-)
