I would like to see a feature that would permit selecting a square block of text
instead of all lines.  This would make it possible to select, say, a column of
numbers and then get a sum for them in Writer.  It would also make selecting
columns for copying later in the text.

I just ran into a situation where this would have been very useful.  What I had
to do was call up the calculator program and run the totals, however, the list
was rather long so I didn't trust it.  I entered each number in a spreadsheet,
one at a time and had to keep switching back and forth to verify that all the
numbers were correct.  When I was certain, I ran a sum then copied and pasted
the result back in Writer.  The "block select" or "column select" would have
been very helpful.
