there was atleast one beta OOo1.1.0 that had lots of icons accompanying it on
Windows, versions with and without the gulls, those without being large and
clearer I thought and I'd planned to standardise on them in users' desktops. now
the OOo executable has the same number of icons (I think) but they're just
repeats of one another rather then different images

right-click on a OOo Windows desktop icon -> properties -> Change Icon...

there are various icons available but loads are repeats of one another

in an earlier 1.1.0 beta there didn't used to be repeats, instead
there were lots of varieties, including some nice ones that were
simpler, lacking extra details, for example just an icon for word
processing and no guls

Icon on alternative icon is double

click start> programfiles > openoffice
right click on one of the office, example writer. 
properties, change icon, we will see some icon are double. 

same in win xp, OOo 1.1 Final

In a OO1.1 final every icon does exist only once. Some icons like the
one for the writer and the one for the writer-template look nearly the
same, but they aren´t. There is a small difference between them. So
this issue is not a defect but may be written new as a wish for an
enhancement (changing and/or adding some icons).

well, if you can see the difference then please enlighten us as I
can't tell what that difference is, with the naked eye
