After creating a 3d object and clicking Format>3D Effects there is a ball
symbolising the light on the object. 
When closing the 3d effects dialog, this ball does not disapear. Only when
minimizing and maximizing the window the part where it was is correctly redrawn.

Sorry, I cannot reproduce this here. Please try this: switch off Open
GL usage under Tools/options/openoffice.org/view/3dview/use OpenGL. If
this helps thatn it is the fault of a badly programmed OpenGL driver
of your Graphic Card. Thanks in advance.

Indeed switching off the OpenGL driver has helped. It was a false alarm.
