Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 19463
outline numbering - space to text - applied incorrectly
Last modified: 2014-03-19 15:32:34 UTC
The setting of the value of "Space to text" is applied to the distance of the heading from edge of the printable page, and not to the space between the number and the heading. I don't think that the unit of measurement is relevant (but I have not explicitly checked this). I am using the font "Bitstream Vera Serif" at 12 point. Action to reproduce: Type in the following ="headings" B Ba Baa Baaa Baaaa Baaaaa Apply consecutively Heading styles 1 through 6. in Tools >> Outline Numbering >> Numbering set "Number" to "1, 2, 3" for levels "1 - 10" click ok in Tools >> Outline Numbering >> Position set "Space to text" to "15mm" for levels "1 - 10" click ok Actual Result: It appears that the first 3 headings are aligned in the same pixel column about 15mm from the edge of the page, but subsequent headings have no space between the number and the heading so the headings are pushed further to the right. Expected Result: (as specified in the extended tool tip for "Space to text") There should be a gap of 15mm between the number and the heading.
Created attachment 9216 [details] example headings file, for out of sequence heading
Further, if you click on the heading "Baa", and then set it a "Heading 7" style, the whole heading is shunted left. See attached file "headings.sxw".
===> Ooops! I meant shunted RIGHT!!! <===
On further investigation, I think the real problem is that the titles "Space to text" and "Minimum space numbering <-> text" and the associated extended tool tips are at least confusing, if not wrong. Specifically: I suggest that: (A) "Space to text" be renamed something like "Distance of heading from left margin", and the extended tooltip rewritten.. (B) "Minimum space numbering <-> text" is correct, but that the extended tooltip needs to be rewritten. My initial interpretation was that "Space to text" was the amount of space betwen the number and the heading, and that "Minimum space numbering <-> text" was the space betwen the heading and the first line of the following paragraph. This is what I understood from reading the current extended tool tips. I guess I implicitly think "text" as meaning the "text of the following paragraph" as distinct from the "text of the heading". However, I still think that the problem I mentioned at 2003-09-11 12:52 PDT, is real. Possibly it should be given its own bug report?
hello nivag 1. yes please report the error you posted at 2003-09-11 12:52 PDT in an own issue i will set this issue as enhancement because of your last post and your ideas of renaming "space to text" and the tooltip of "Minimum space numbering <-> text" and forward it to bh who is responsible for enhancements.
set issuetype to ENHANCEMENT reassigned to bh
I gave the defect mentioned in Nivag 2003-09-11 12:52 PDT and Jack Warchold 2003-09-12 04:07 PDT its own issue# 19487.

Position and spacing - Numbering followed by Tab stop at 15mm is measured from numbering most significant figure so as numbering level is higher space to text is smaller. AOO410m14(Build:9760) - Rev. 1573062 2014-03-01_04:11:01 - Rev. 1573123 Debian
