Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 1929
Font selection aborts OO
Last modified: 2008-05-13 15:32:11 UTC
System: Debian PPC w/ MS TrueType Fonts installed XFree 4.1.0 w/KDE 2.2 Steps to reproduce: - Load up Writer. - Type in something (still crashes without any text though). - Select font dropdown menu from toolbar. - Writer starts to save document. - Writer aborts. Alternative path: - After you have typed in something, use the contextual menu to change fonts after highlighting text. On my system, I can change it to Palatino or Arial without problem. However, if I select Courier, OO aborts - Highlight text and use menubar path of Format -> Character. If you use Palatino, you're ok. If you use Courier and click ok, OO aborts. OO is having trouble displaying certain fonts (in my case, Courier). When it tries to render them, it aborts which is why the dropdown menu with its rendered fonts crashes OO but changing it through the other options can work.
Hi, This is a bug in XFreee86 4.1.0 in libXrender in Xrender.c The fix has been commited to the XFree86 tree so future releases will have it automatically. I have sent patches to SuSE and YDL so newer versions of XF 4.1.0 will not have this problem. If you want the patch, please e- mail me at: kevin.hendricks@sympatico.ca This bug impacts all platforms (an uninitialized variable is used in an "if" statement so we are testing random garbage) but seems to hit ppc linux hard. Just let me know if you want the patch. Also please CC me in the future will all ppc linux bug reports. Thanks, Kevin
You may have missed the Mail to the "announce alias" of Oct 3rd: Subject: [announce] OpenOffice.org Build 638C released for PPC Linux In there, you find this <quote> PLEASE NOTE: If you have the URW fonts installed, please upgrade them to the very latest versions from your distribution type (copies of the RedHat RawHide urw-fonts src and noarch rpms are available on the download sites) since older URW fonts have some minor corruption that can make OpenOffice anti-aliased text segfault (and yes we are working on making freetype much more robust to corrupt Type 1 font data). <unquote> Please verify and comment. Thank you.

I'd like to throw my vote behind this again. Having the option for a split window view, especially on a laptop, is most useful for academics, technical writers and authors. You may want to move a block of text in a long document. Having a split window allows the user to copy/paste and compare both the original block and the new block prior to committing changes. Otherwise, one has to scroll through a potentially long document between sections to perform the same action. It is literally the one feature that has kept (the expensive) MSO on my Macs and PCs. This would be a very useful and welcome addition to Writer, at least.
