Description Unknown 2003-08-22 10:49:50 UTC
I loaded a document created with MS-Word2000 (japanese) containing a simple math object.
The appearance of the equation was fine.
However, when I double-click the math object,
"Error activating object: General OLE error".
happened, and I could not edit it.
Neither the math object nor text do not contain Japanese.
This issue occurs on Win98eng, SuSE8.2eng, and TurboLinux8.0jap.
Since science students, who are future solid user base, will frequently import MS-math object,
I believe priority of this issue is high.

There are two possibilities to edit a Formula object from MS documents:

- without converting to OO Math object: you must have an MS Office
with Equation/MathType Editor installed on your Windows system;
otherwise you get the error message you mentioned.

- with conversion to OO Math object: the MS Equation/MathType object
will be turned into an OO Math object. Doubleclicking the object will
start the OO Formula editor and you could work on your math object.

The conversion can be toggled in "Tools.Options.Load/Save.Microsoft
Office". But be aware: OO 1.1 RC3 has a bug, where the conversion does
not work. Take an earlier version (RC1/2) or just wait for OO 1.1
final. This error is documented in issue #18211.
Comment 5 michael.ruess 2003-08-29 09:37:34 UTC
Closed, because original problem is not a bug.
Comment 6 Unknown 2003-08-29 10:37:19 UTC
Ok, I will wait for 1.1 final.
Still, I think that this is a bug for Linux version,
because there is no MS Equation editor in Linux.
OOo should automatically convert it into OO math object.
Thank you for your response.

You can file a new issue, regarding the problem on Unix system.
File this as "Enhancement", Platform "Linux" or "Solaris", with the
request to have the enabled object conversion on non-Windoze systems
as default.
