Description mroper 2001-10-10 02:15:52 UTC
Hi, first time using this so I appologize in advance if I make mistakes.

Trying to import an Excel spreadsheet into openoffice and it is taking 10
minutes to open. In excel it takes 10 seconds. The spreadsheet is over 7 Meg
in size and is fairly complex. Openoffice does eventually open it. I can save
it to native format but it won't actually open after I do this. Ie I left it
for 30 miutes and once it had finished loading it (the blue bar had stopped
moving), it hanged.

Any ideas?

Hi Miles,

Yes you did but it's not too bad and I'm also here to tell you how to
improve your bug writing.

This sounds like your discribing _two_ bugs.
1.Bug: OpenOffice.org takes a long time to open an excel file.
10 Minutes seem too long for me too. But we will never reach the 10
seconds excel needs for several reasons:
- We're not only opening the file, we also need some time to
'translate' this alien format.
- Excel is only designed and optimized to work on windows. OpenOffice
is designed to work on multiple platforms therefor it is a little bit
slower.
- Your Excel is a product version. OpenOffice is a developer version.

2.Bug: Saving the excel doc to StarOffice6.0 freezes.

In both cases I have to asked you to edit this bug again and attach
the file that causes the problem because that the only way to evaluate
these kind of issues. If the document is confidential please create a
document that is similar.
If you set OS to other please give us some infomation about your
environment.
BTW: You should call the blue bar progress bar. Mine isn't even blue
because I changed the view properties. ;-)

Best regards, Peter

Hi Peter,

I've got some more information for you. My PC is a Windows 95 with
128 Meg of Ram, I'm running a K6 2 450.

I'm going to try and attach three files for you to have a look at.

File1.xls

As the information in the orginal spreadsheet had senstive
information I have gone through and tried to find out what is causing
it to take so long to open in Openoffice. Evenetually I tried
deleting all the sheets except one. I then deleted all the
information in that sheet and then made several copies of it. This
spreadsheet opens in less than 1/4 of a second in excel, it has no
information in it that I can see. If however you try to open the
file in openoffice it around 60 seconds. The orginal spreadsheet has
over 12 sheets, so takes over 5 minutes to import.

File2.xls

This time I created a completely new sheet, it has in it 3 sheets,
each 7000 rows and 20 columns. I has a couple of suming formulas and
a bit of formatting. It takes about 5 seconds in Excel to open, and
15 seconds in open office (this is fine). Next I tried saving the
file as the orginal file type (Excel 97). This took about 1:30
seconds, to save the file in Excel takes 5 seconds. Lastly I tried
saving the file as a Openoffice document, this took about 5 minutes
and increased the size of my swap file from 100 Meg to 180 Meg. When
I go to open the file, it again increases my swap file size by about
80 Meg and takes 5 minutes to open.

File3.sxc

Is the coverted file.xls from above.

Hope this helps :o)

Cheers

Miles

Hi Miles,
please try to attach the file one more time. I guess something went
wrong with issuezilla :-(

Looks like you did nothing wrong but issuezilla gave an ID=0. I think
we have ID at about 580 at the moment.

I take it you don't need me to add the attachments again?

Hi Miles,
please attach the zip file again. For some reason issuezilla trashed it.

Hi Miles,
looks like issuezilla doesn't like files of this size. Could you
please send it via email or put it on server where I can download it.
Regards, Peter

Hi Miles,
please send me the doc via email. Issuezilla has a limit of 1 MB file
size.
Have a look at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=1938
Because I don't like this kind of stuff that makes us waste our time I
commented the issue and increased it's priority.

Hi Peter,

Tried sending an email to issues@www.openoffice.org (reply to
address) and get a bounce. Tried sending to pj@openoffice.org and
get a bounce. Tried sending to issues@openoffice.org and get a
bounce too I think (not sure about that one).

Do you have a email address which I can use to send this attachment.

ahhhhhhhhh :o)

Here was the orginal email I tried sending.

I did send it to you via email, several days ago, I'll try again. I
wonder if its getting block because of the size somewhere. What I'll
do is I'll compress the file into 5 or 6 different parts and send you
these. What email address do I send it to, pj@openoffice.org? I'll
try this, let me know if I should be sending it elsewhere.

Cheers

Miles

Hi Miles,
thanks again for your patience. Your files now arrived safely in my
InBox. I'm now reassigning it to Oliver who's our excel expert.
