Description Unknown 2001-10-09 16:14:42 UTC
When I attempt to install version 638C everything comes to a halt at the
screen "Select Installation Directory". Nothing happens, no drives are
shown and you can not click the "browse" button. I must manually close
the install program.

This is on a PC P550 with 256 meg of memory, 3.7gig free on a 8.5gig
drive for C: and 8.5gig free on a 20gig for D:

Graphics card - ATI Rage 128XPERT, 32.0meg memory ATI2DRAA.DRV version
4.00, 16bit 1024x768.

Thanks

Joseph St.Clair

Which Xfree are you using?
Comment 2 Olaf Felka 2001-10-11 15:19:15 UTC
Hi Joseph,
forget about Xfree. Thats rubbish!
Is your computer connected to a network? I could imagine that there is
a slow network connection disturbing this dialog. Otherwise I have no
idea what might cause this problem
Comment 3 Unknown 2001-10-11 15:26:57 UTC
I am connected to 2 Novell servers and 2 Linux servers. The problem
seems to be with one of the Linux servers. Both Linux servers are
running Samba and I have drive letters for the Samba mounts on the
Windows box. One of the Linux servers is only for backup and is
turned off most of the time. This is the problem. When I turn on the
backup Linux box the the install runs fine.
Comment 4 Olaf Felka 2001-10-12 09:19:49 UTC
Hi Olli,
can we use a time out when a (net-) drive isn't responding?
Comment 5 Unknown 2001-10-24 00:53:41 UTC
I had the same problem with my 733 Mhz Dell Windows NT 4.0 computer.
It finally came back after 5 to 10 minutes. Reading this issue made
me want until the dialog window finally showed the information. On
build 627 the dialog window had the information immediately. You
want to time out the net connections. However on my 200 Mhz Window
NT 4.0 computer with more network connects, the "Select Installation
Directory" information came up immediately on Build 638.

This happens to me as well, in both KDE and Gnome (whatever versions
come with RedHat 7.2).

"setup" (run from a local directory) gives me "box opening" icon with
an incrementing bar that runs to completion.

In KDE, the installer goes full screen, with a window that says
"Installation program for OpenOffice.org 641". Two vertical quarters
of this screen have colors inverted, with half blinking.

KDE usually freezes completely here, but sometimes goes on to the next
step.

In Gnome I can get to the next step without any problem. Under
"Installation program for OpenOffice.org 641", when I click "Next",
system freezes completely and immediately. Cannot switch to other
screens with either ALT-TAB or Ctrl-Fx. Gotta reset.

If, instead of "Next", I hit ESC key, system freezes, sometimes with a
continous beep. A box, presumably an error message, starts but is not
drawn before the beep/freeze.

Doesn't matter if I'm logged in as me or su root.

OS: RedHat 7.2 w/ kernel 2.4.9-13 on a i686
(happens with kernel 2.4.7-10 as well)
mobo: ASUS A7VI-VM/550/SWA/WOL-UAY
video: onboard SiS 730S
sound: onboard AC97(not configured)
256MB SDRAM in 2 Mushkin DIMMs
NIC: 3Com Etherlink XL (3c905C-TX)
CDROM: ASUS CD-S520/A
3.5' 1.44mb floppy
HD: IBM 40MB GXP60 formatted ext3, 1.5GB free, 260K free on /
(including /tmp)
Xserver: S3 Savage4 Pro+
depth: 16
mode: 1152x864
monitor: SPT9803 (Spectre DragonEye 19")

Networking is only IP to internet, nothing local. Unplugged the
network cable and turned off all networking services, problem persists.

I've yet to get OpenOffice working on this computer. No other
applications give me a hint of video problems. I have not had an
opportunity to attempt this install on another computer.

I have the same problem on a Toshiba Tecra with a mobile Savage MX
graphics processor.

StarOffice 5.2 would also not install or run on this system.

This is a quote from http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html where the
current maintainer of the Savage driver timr@probo.com says.

StarOffice hangs on installation. <http://www.probo.com/icons/prp.gif>
This is probably my #1 Most Frequently Asked Question... There is a
known conflict between StarOffice 5.2 (and, presumably, OpenOffice as
well) and the Savage driver up to 1.1.19. There is a note in the
StarOffice README about hangs when using a ViRGE chip, along with a
suggested workaround, and the workaround also applies to the Savage.
The workaround is to set an environment variable
"SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50" to "true" before launching StarOffice. The
trickiest part is making sure StarOffice really sees the variable. If
you use xdm/kdm, you must use one of the global rc files, like
/etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, or /etc/rc.d/rc.local. NOTE, however, that
this problem should no longer occur as of version 1.1.20t.

I will try upgrading the driver and report back.

Tim was never able to get a responce as to what the variable
SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50 was.
Comment 8 Unknown 2002-01-23 08:24:13 UTC
Yep that fixed it, for Linux users anyway. (It is not clear if
everone here is using Linux). Upgrade to savage_drv.o version 1.1.20t.

I have similar problem (installer hangs) on windows NT.
I have succesfully installed build 638, then 641D in another directory,
then 1.0.
Then I deinstalled one of the builds, and tried to install 1.0.1,
but installation hangs when I should select the directory where it
should be installed. The dialog box has empty directory for installation.
I remember from previous installation it was suggesting that I install
in the same directory.
Now that I have 3 directories which contained installed OpenOffices,
and they are all deinstalled (probably not completely because there
are some files) it probably cannot determine which directory to offer
me for installation.

Is there any document describing how to completely remove previous
OpenOffice version from my computer, so that I can try a fresh install?
Comment 10 mdaskalo 2002-08-13 20:27:42 UTC
The problem was that I had a drive mapped which doesn't response.
I disconnected from all drives which do not respond and the problem
was fixed.
Comment 11 stx123 2002-11-29 20:35:33 UTC
reassigning to dirk - I don't think Oliver will work on these issues any more.
Comment 12 dirk.voelzke 2002-12-11 13:35:57 UTC
This probably won't be fixed before OOo 2.0
Comment 13 dirk.voelzke 2003-09-11 11:14:17 UTC
OOo 2.0 will use native installers, therefor this issue will not be fixed.
Comment 14 dirk.voelzke 2003-09-16 09:39:41 UTC
Please close.
Comment 15 Olaf Felka 2003-09-16 10:13:08 UTC
Won't occure in 2.0 with native installer.
