Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 18365
Opening non-default filetypes
Last modified: 2008-11-05 20:25:03 UTC
I would like a way of easily opening files in any OOo format that I like regardless of the file extension, obviously some file won't open in some programs, but the ones that can ought to be simple to open. I suggest that when opening a file OOo would do as it does now where it opens files in the default program for that file type, then if you want to open say a text file in spreadsheet, instead of finding the TXT CSV under the spreadsheet area, simply allow the user to choose what extension to look for, just have a nice clean list of all the standard file types OOo supports, as wells as allowing the user to type in a custom one in order to find it easier, then have a separate pull down tab, or something, that allows you to choose the program to open the file with, if you don't choose anything it would revert to it's default. This would allow a user to have a funny extension on say a txt file and yet still be able to open it if they know the correct program to use. If they select a program that simply cannot open the specified file give them an error. Or even if it brings up garbled stuff it's not that big a deal to my thinking. This is just one idea of how to make that interface a little easier to use, it just seems a little cryptic to me as well as limiting in the things you can do.

Issue 23078 isn't quite the same but it deals with the same problem. At any rate there are work arounds that have either been added since I posted this issue or perhaps I've just gotten better at working with OOo. I can now open a .xyz text file in calc without too much difficulty. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 23078 ***
