Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 18006
Unable to install OO1.1 RC2 on Microsoft SBS 2003 RC1
Last modified: 2006-04-04 20:52:56 UTC
Execution of setup.exe failed. Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 uses Windows Server 2003 as basic platform. This specific release (Build 3790) is very stable and probably very close to final released product?
Please be more specific. What do you mean with setup fails? Errors? Error messages? Please give a detailed step-by-step walkthrough to reproduce.
1. Install Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 RC 2. Login to SBS2003 3. Download and unpack/unzip OO 1.1 RC 4. Navigate to OO installation folder 5. Double-Click on Setup.Exe Since SBS2003 is built on Windows Server 2003 - it is possible this problem may exist there are well?
After clicking on setup.exe nothing else happens?
Installation stalls. Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del) indicates program is "non-responsive".
Created attachment 9374 [details] screenshot of errormessage on second setup execution (german)
I confirm the issue. Running on a Windows 2003 Server it is apparently not possible to execute the setup program more than once without rebooting in between. The attachment shows an erromesage that is displayed when the setup.exe is executed the second time. It does not matter if it is executed by the same or different users.
Reassigning to HRO
So it state we have at least two problems: 1. On Small Buoisiness Server 2003 setup.exe hangs. 2. On Windows 2003 Server the self-extracting executable cannot be executed twice without rebooting inbetween. So I'd like to know wether setup.exe can be executed more than once or at all on Windows 2003 server. Using the self-extracting download file that causes the error message seems to be a separate problem. Also it has to be clarified wether the problem reported by marshje is only occurs with OOo 1.1 RC 2 or may on later releases.
I got RC2 for Windows installed on Win98 not too long ago, but had the hang problems installing RC4. There was some disk activity but no trace of screen display, and then the disk stopped its activity and the mouse because unresponsive. Even control-alt-delete was unresponsive. Then the same happened re-installing RC2. I'm back to 1.02, which installed fine.
I should add that ordinarily I uninstall one version before installing another one, but the uninstall of 1.1RC2 failed using the add/remove software menu of Windows Control panel. I deleted RC2 by deleting the Openoffice directory, desktop and start menu directories. I didn't touch any files stored in Windows, Windows\system, etc. I did remove Acrobat Reader 6 as I thought there might be a conflict between the two pdf displayers. And I removed all references in the registry to openoffice and soffice. Then I found that RC4 and even RC2 would fail to install, as described. On each failure I had to hit reset to get the PC going again.
Reassigned.
I need some more informations here. JohnT, you wrote you installed rc 2 on Win98 but you had problems with RC 4 ( with Win98 ? ).
Responding to Dirk: Yes, all installations are on Win98 SE. I tried to uninstall RC2 using Control Panel Add/Remove Programs before the installation, and that didn't do anything. I then tried removing by hand, "deltree"ing the main directory in Program Files, Desktop and Start entries. Running the RC4 setup then produced disk activity that decreased to nothing, and at some point the system hung, requiring a reset to recover. Ctl-Alt-Del did nothing.
I just read some of the setup.inf file and found a section that stops the setup if sversion.ini or another file exist in \windows\application data. I found that I had this file, of zero length, and deleted it. tried to install, had to reboot, tried again, same thing. What else could prevent the installation program from starting and displaying the GUI?
Has the installation problem with RC2, RC4, etc been confirmed or resolved? Does RC5 have a fix for it?
Dirk, I think I diagnosed my installation problem to some extent. About 6 weeks ago I installed Java J2RE 1.42 for Windows and started having various hang-type problems that I don't recall the details of now, just obscure nuisances. Today I tried 1.42.01 with the same bad results. So I tried to uninstall J2RE 1.42.01 and go back to J2RE 1.40. The uninstall hung similarly to the way my OO installs failed, and I had to hit reset to get out of it. After the restart, the add/remove software panel showed J2RE 1.42 was still present, and a second try at uninstalling continued successfully. After installing J2RE 1.40, RC4 installed fine though it didn't find or recognize the older Java installation automatically. The installation panel also said that J2RE 1.41 or later was needed for full functionality, but it beats no functionality. I haven't looked up reports of problems with J2RE 1.42 but will as soon as I post this. If others have Java problems, Sun should be notified.
Has anyone tested the compatibility of J2RE 1.40, 1.4.1_05 and 1.4.2 with the scripts that install Openoffice.org on Windows 98 platforms? I believe there's a problem with 1.4.2, as it doesn't allow OO to install. Going back to 1.40 enables the installation. Not sure about 1.4.1_05, but the Sun Java pages say 1.4.1 is considered to be approaching end-of-life. If that's so, someone needs to figure out how to make 1.42 work in installing OpenOffice.org.
The scripts installing OOo doesn't need Java. OOo tries to detect Java at start of installation. If there is a defective Java it might cause troubles.
I removed jre 1.4.0 and installed 1.4.2_01. It hung about halfway through the install, so I hit reset and ran the setup program again. This time it seemed to have finished installing OK. But the installation of OO 1.1.0 failed twice without any graphic interface showing. I removed J2RE 1.4.2_01 and installed 1.4.1_05. I think it installed with no problems, but then OO 1.1.0 failed to install. With 1.4.0, OO 1.1.0 installed fine. OO 1.1.0 doesn't seem to work with J2RE 1.4.1 or later.
Could not reproduce with 1.1 rc5. Please verify.
Could not reproduce either. I set up a fresh Win98 install with a J2RE 1.42. No luck. Can you still reproduce it, John?
No feedback for months, can't be that relevant. Re-targeted to 1.1.2.
The issue went away when I removed a newer Java runtime and re-installed Sun Java J2RE 1.40 again. Versions 1.41 and 1.42 seem to be associated with Mozilla bug reports as well, so I'm looking forward to the release of J2RE 1.50. I haven't seen any further problems with Openoffice.org 1.10.
Thanks for the info. Marked as fixed. If the problem remains, please feel free to reopen.
