Description anthonymerhi 2003-08-04 22:20:50 UTC
Currently, in a large document, the user has no way of telling at a glance from
the Navigator where she currently is, topically, in the document (i.e., under
which outline heading she currently is) when she scrolls up and down the
document. Other popular word-processors have this feature.

Business requirement: The user should be able to see where she is, topically, in
the document by glancing at the Navigator, and the Navigator should show her her
current position in real-time as she scrolls up and down the document.

Proposal: Have the Navigator update in real-time as the Stylist does. Initially,
when the document is first opened, the highlight in the Navigator should be on,
say, 'Introduction' (e.g., the first para with Heading 1 style, if the first
para in the doc is an outline para). Thereafter, the highlght should move in
real-time to reflect the outline heading under which the user currently is.

This activity entry is my response to the request for feedback which was made in
the Grand Bug Squash, pre v3 e-mail.

As requested, I have downloaded and installed OO Beta 3.0.0 on GNU Debian, and
have observed the following:

- The real-time Navigator update capability requested in this issue (17863) is
still not implemented. I believe that this requirement is still valid. The
requested feature is an important tool for those who work with large documents
which are deeply structured (e.g., contracts, specs, etc).

- The Navigator appears to have regressed. It now displays a tree of
non-expandable/collapsible nodes, whereas it used to display a tree of
individually expandable/collapsible nodes. The Navigator still displays a
correctly indented outline tree, but the individual tree-nodes no longer have
the + and – controls which allow the user to expand and collapse sub-heading
levels. For a user who works with large structured documents, this is a loss of
existing functionality and therefore represents a regression. When opening the
same large document in OO 2.4.0, the + and – handles do appear on each node and
do expand/collapse as expected.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".

Good suggestion.
