In earlier versions of OO, I was able to set cells, columns in different 
colours, but I cannot find how to do it in OO1.1RC.

For example, I wish to show negative numbers in red, certain columns in various 
shades of red or magenta, and some in green.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

This is not an issue. For support questions please use the OOo mailing
lists e.g. users@openoffice.org
p.s. Maybe the conditional formatting feature could solve your problem.
