Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 17488
character spacing for MS ttf-fonts
Last modified: 2003-09-29 11:53:35 UTC
I found out a difference in character spacing between the Writer and Draw programs while using MS ttf fonts. In the Writer program the spacing looks good, but in the Draw program the spaces and as the result of this strings look shorter (for example, when I use MS Times New Roman font). I prepared files and screenshots illistrating this but unfortunately I can't attach them here (I don't see any fields for attachment in my browser). I can send them to you by email if you need to look at them. I didn't see such a difference in OpenOffice 1.0.3 - all looked good in it. I work on PC/Linux platform. Thank you for OpenOffice, it's a great program. Khalil Rakhmanov, e-mail: rkh@mail.ru

Reassigned to Christian.
I don't see any differents between the attached documents. Is it possible that the attached screenshots are from the same document (writer)?

Yes, that was the same screenshot. I put a new one for Draw program (draw.png).
change the target and set to new
I can reproduce the bug when I create the docs on Windows or a Linux with a times new roman font and open it with a linux without a times new roman font. It looks like different font fallbacks in Writer and Impress/Draw. Please have a look.
First I suggest to install a scalable version of the Times font on a system. Having to use bitmap metrics for formatting is less than desirable. Writer defaults to "use high res reference device for formatting", which gives great line and page breaks Draw defaults to "use display metrics metrics for formatting" which gives a more pleasant display I suggest to use the same formatting method (e.g. use printer metrics) in both apps if the difference as mentioned in the issue is as important. For Writer check the setting in the menue item Tools -> Options -> Text Document -> General in the compatibility setting. For Draw check the setting in the menue item Tools -> Options -> Drawing -> General in the compatibility setting. If the apps use different settings please choose the same formatting method if the slight difference bothers you. If the difference disappears, especially for the printout, I suggest to close this issue. - Else please attach both test documents (in *sxw and *sxd format) HDU->CGU: When there is no scalable Times font on the system, during the printount there is still a problem (issue 16573) which will get fixed in 1.1.1 once CWS vcl7pp1r2 gets integrated.
Thanks! Your suggestion to use printer metrics for formatting helped me. It fixed both display and printer output in Draw documents.
Closing.
