Description magrawal 2003-07-25 12:42:32 UTC
It is possible that this issue is not really an issue but I thought that the
page numbering in the attached document was inconsistent.

I created a page and assigned it the first page style. Then I inserted a page
break and assigned the next page the default style starting at page 4. At this
time, though I only had 2 pages in the document, the status bar said I had 3
pages. I am wondering if this is the correct behavior. Also, when I insert the
page number on this page, the page number reads 5. I had expected it to read
page 4.

Then I added 2 more page breaks and assigned both new pages the left page style.
I asked for the first left page to start at 2 and the second left page to start
at 12. The page starting at 12 resulted in the addition of 1 extra invisible
page. But the page numbering was correct at 12.

My problems are 2-fold:

1. Why are these extra pages being added (I would expect this document to have 4
pages but it has 6)

2. Why did it change page number 4 to 5 but did not change page number 12 to 13
(both of these pages resulted in the insertion of 1 invisible page)

Believe it or not, this is a commonly reported problem that keeps
being treated as if it were not a problem.

For one thing, it has been frequently noted that having two "odd" or
"even" pages back to back will (properly) create a blank page between
them. This is obvious. In your case, however, you are following an
odd page with an even page. Writer should NOT add any extra blank
pages as this technique is also used to change pagination styles (most
often from i, ii, iii, ... to 1, 2, 3, ... .

Try defining a "Default - First Page." Modify it so that "Default" is
on the "Next Page" item of the Organizer. Now enter your Manual Break
and set it to begin with "Default - First Page." Check it and see if
your actual first page ("4" in the example you used) is "Default -
First Page" or is simply "Default."

If it is "Default" then Writer is assigning "Default - First Page" to
an extraneous extra blank page making it nearly impossible to get the
result you want. Please try this and report the results here.

On the other point -- all pages beyond the Manual Page Break should be
repaginated. Failure to do so would certainly be a bug.

This mostly seems OK to me, there may be a few chinks in the armor
though.
