Description Unknown 2003-07-24 20:58:00 UTC
I recently upgraded from 1.0.3 on my Gentoo Linux system (I'm using your binary
releases -- not compiling from source), and I find that both 1.1 RC and 1.1
Beta2 have a problem that was not present in the 1.0.x releases: frequent
7-second pauses when processing events.

For instance, I start up any of the oo* programs and click on the File menu: it
highlights immediately, but the program hangs for 7 seconds before bringing up
the menu. I've seen the same delay when scrolling using the mouse wheel or
grabbing the scroll bar (on some apps it happens right away, such as oocal,
while on others it only happens if the document contains multiple pages, such as
oowriter) -- a slight bit of immediate scrolling occurs, then the pause, then
more action. Popping up dialogs has the same pause (such as pressing
export-to-PDF in oodraw, or getting a file-modified dialog when clicking the
close box in oowriter) -- the dialog only shows up after the 7-second delay.

What info can I provide to help you narrow this down? I'm running xfree 4.3.0,
kde 3.1.2, I'm using a Matrox MGA G400 using the "mga" driver (but I'm not sure
if hardware acceleration is on or not). Anything you want to know about my setup?
Comment 1 Unknown 2003-07-24 21:38:56 UTC
I suppose I should have mentioned that my system is a dual P3 733
running a stock SMP Linux 2.4.21.

Another interesting thing about the scrolling slowness: there is no
slowness if I scroll using the PgUp/PgDn keys or by clicking the
up/down arrows on the scroll bar, only when: using the mouse wheel,
grabbing the scrollbar slider, or (for some apps, such as oocalc)
paging by clicking in the scrollbar (it's interesting that oowriter
does not experience this paging-by-scrollbar slowness -- maybe that
will help to narrow it down?).

you are the second person that i see that has reported a consistant
some second delays. Can you provide me more info on your OOo build,
java version, and how you installed the product? thanks

Reassigned to Thorsten.
Comment 4 Unknown 2003-07-26 08:26:13 UTC
My openoffice installations are based on the gentoo ebuilds that use
the binary packages that you folks release. For instance, the very
latest ebuild downloads and installs OOo_1.1rc_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz.

My java setup was blackdown 1.4.1 until just moments ago. I just
decided to try installing the sun 1.4.1.04 release, and lo-and-behold:
all the 7-second pauses in the openoffice tools have now gone away!

So, this looks to be a blackdown-related problem.
Comment 5 laimis 2003-07-26 12:49:40 UTC
yeah I suspected java might be involved in this.

I am closing the issue because the problem was in the third party
tool. However there might be some glitches in OOo code and the way it
uses java run time that makes all these bugs possible that developers
should think about.
Comment 6 Unknown 2003-07-26 19:08:06 UTC
If you're closing this bug, are you going to change the install
process to refuse to use blackdown? Or at least mention somewhere that
blackdown is not an acceptable Java choice for use with OOo? Since the
OOo 1.0.3 release worked fine with blackdown 1.4.1, I thought that
this would be something you'd want to investigate and try to fix.
Comment 7 laimis 2003-07-27 02:06:08 UTC
Let me discuss this with qa project leads and also I wonder what
Thorsten thinks.

Your issue showed that blackdown java was a problem. However before we
put OOo as "uncompatible" with blackdown java, there is much more
testing needed.

I know where was an issue with blackdown java and installation program
before, but the issue was marked as fixed (Issue 15152).

Once i hear from the leads, I will post here.

I just takled over about this with one of the QA project leads.
Basically I will follow his advice on this:

1. I will inform blackdown people of the problem that you experienced
so that they could check and fix at their end.

2. The issue is reopening but with different Summary field to reflect
of the lack of the warning from OOo side about the possible problems
due to java version.

TM->BH: The wish for an implementation of a java detection and warning
might be a wish for a feature but not a defect within OO or
staroffice. Please have a look. Thanks !
P.S.: As far as I know there have been made some changes within the
setup of the latest internal version about the java detection.
Comment 11 Unknown 2003-09-20 02:48:42 UTC
It appears that the original version of this bug might be worse than
we thought. I just had my formerly-fine installation of the OOo RC (1)
binary release start to have these pausing problems, even though I was
still using the aforementioned Sun JDK 1.4.1.04 (not blackdown). I
then then proceeded to install the OOo RC4 binary release and Sun JDK
1.4.2.01 without any change in the pausing problem, only to
thereafter notice that WHERE I start the program affects the pausing:

If I run "oowriter name.doc" from certain shells, it has the pausing
problem, and from other shells it does not. I have not been able to
narrow down any significant environment variable differences, though,
so I'm just curious if anyone else has any ideas what might be wrong?
Comment 12 Unknown 2003-09-20 07:25:58 UTC
More info: I reinstalled the old blackdown JDK 1.4.1 package that I
was using back in July (in place of the just-installed Sun JDK), and
the pauses did NOT recur. So, it appears that the real fix from my
first go-round with Java installs was that, in the process of
installing a new JDK, I had exited all my long-running shell processes
and restarted them. This appears to have been (for some unknown
reason) the real fix in eliminating the pauses. I will try some more
testing to see if I can get the gliches to recur.

Q: Should we change this bug back to a "defect"?
Comment 13 Unknown 2003-09-20 07:47:38 UTC
OK, I've managed to figure out what is causing the pauses: a stale
SESSION_MANAGER variable in the environment. In my situation I use
long-running shell processes under a program named "screen". When one
of these shell processes outlives kdeinit (i.e. when I restart X
Windows and then reattach to my old screens), the SESSION_MANAGER
variable in the environment has the wrong process number in it. Thus,
any oo* program I run from one of these shells exhibits the frequent
pausing problem. If I either update the environment variable or just
unset it, the pausing goes away.
