Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 17221
Incorrect importing of Word 2000 document
Last modified: 2003-09-17 10:17:24 UTC
I have encountered a number of issues while importing a Word 2000 document. I have attached a Word document and its OO counterpart that demonstrates each of these issues clearly. What follows here is a summary that is also found inside the OO document. Please refer to the OO document to see exactly how the issues appear. #1: the issue number is a document variable in the Word document. I understand OO does not support such variables, but having to go through the document and updating every single occurrence of the issue number (as well as a host of other variables) is hardly an option. #2: this line does not exist in the original Word document, at least for Word 2000. However, I have noticed other Word versions (at a customer site; sorry, I do not recall which version they are using) getting this line wrong too. #3: the section name is concatenated with the section number. It is readable, but ugly. #4: the extra chapter 3 is not present in the original document. My guess is that an empty line exists that happens to have the “chapter” style applied, which OO translates into a “real” chapter. #5: this block was supposed to be on the previous page. #6: the text on this line is not present in the original. Could be a hidden field, maybe, but I haven't managed to reveal it in Word. #7: the table number looks different. The original is numbered 1.2-1; here, the section number is repeated to make 1.2-1.2.1. #8: although the document variable from which this section is created was changed to a different value, this still reflects the original value. However, if I load the text into Word I see exactly the same thing. This is still problematic because in Word I can press a single button to update it, whereas in OO I cannot.

Please only report one problem per issue. Though these refer to one example file, they all refer to deifferent code places. Get more information about filing issues from the Guideline page http://www.openoffice.org/bugs/bug_writing_guidelines.html
