Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 17144
Loss of "Year" Format
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:55:29 UTC
For some reason 1.1RC1 does not have a year option under Format Cells > Format as a Date option. This was present in 1.0.1 and 1.0.3.1 (showed a format as "9999" and worked perfectly). It needs to be added back. Lots of business formats need it.
I see your point. However you can specify the format yourself. When you right click the cell and go to Format Cells... you can enter your own format code. Enter YYYY and it will show the year in the cell only. Since this workaround exists, the priority of the issue is not P2. I would also think that we might close this bug as WORKSFORME.
Let me put it this way: "YYYY" should be a formatting option both in Insert > Fields > Date and in the spreadsheet options for cell formatting. Why? Because the workaround is (1) not going to occur to most users and (2) it is a hassle not present in earlier versions of OOo. There is simply no reason for having dropped it in 1.1RC1. Call it an enhancement, if you will, but it would make life at least as easy (in this area) as version 643c.
Hi Robert, I've checked all released versions of OOo and couldn't find the mentioned format in any of the checked versions. So I have to assume that you had made a custom format and saved it to a custom template. So this is not a bug and I close it as Invalid. Best regards Frank
closed invalid
You can mark it that way if you want, but I have a completely new install of 1.1RC and NO spreadsheet format contains the "1999" formatting that was present in 643c, 1.0.1, 1.0.3.1 and 1.1beta2. It vanished and there is no reason why it should have. It is certainly a valid and common date format. The problems come up when changing an entry that is formatted as date. Close it but it will come up again until it is restored. Suggestion: reopen as a RFE. It is simply NOT reasonable to remove it for no particular reason. I mean, they added "1" to mean a week format (week of the year), which is certainly less used than "1999" meaning year.

Hi Robert, please attach a document that shows what formatting you are missing. As I wrote before, we never had a numberformat 'YYYY' specified. This must be a user defined setting. Frank
I have an original 1.0.3.1 that has not been modified in any way to change date formats (in fact, until yesterday I didn't know I could). It has, as the last entry under Cell Attributes dialog, the format "1999", which is marked as "YYYY". It was there when I downloaded it There seems to be no way to make an entry into the Cell Attributes and make it permanent anyway.
Created attachment 7941 [details] Screenshot of unaltered and unadded-to Cell Attributes Dialog from 1.0.3.1
Hi Robert, I don't know who has entered the format into your default template, but we definitly never had such a format under Format cells date. Check your default template on the 1.0.3.1 using File - Templates - Organize. Double click the default folder in the left frame and check if a document is displayed here. Just select this document and press the command button on the right. Could you select Reset default Template - Spreadsheet ? There does the OOo Version 1.0.3.1 come frome. Is it from the OOo site or was it build by an other person / Organisation ? For more Information about default / User defined default templates have a look in the help system using templates as the search term in the Help Index. Best regards Frank
File > Template > Organize. Looking under Default folder. No files. Press "Command" -- "Reset default" is grayed out. No template is listed as present on opening a file and looking at File > Properties. I got OOo 1.0.3 from the OOo website and upgraded to 1.0.3.1 by applying the patch (also from the OOo website) No answers in Help. To test, I removed 1.0.3.1 entirely, reinstalled, applied the patch and opened. Sure enough, it's still there. Since I am unable to get a custom date format to "stick" by any means available, I really doubt that it was "put in" by accident. However, that you do NOT have it makes it quite a puzzle. Was it in one version one day and that got replaced another day and I just got lucky? If this is just one of those strange things that happens for no known reason, then I'd like to change this request to an RFE to allow the insertion of custom dates that would "stick" in the default.
Hi Robert, strange thinks these are. I do not know of a version that contains this numberformat by default, but you can make it your default. 1. Just open a blank spreadsheet and go to Format - Cells 2. Enter the Format code into the Format line (YYYY) and press the green hook beside the line. Now Click on Ok. 3. Select default from the context menu 4. Go to File - Templates - Save and enter a name for the template. Now click on Ok. 5. Go to File - Templates - Organize and double click on default 6. select the previously saved file and press the command button, select Set as default template and after that press Ok. Now you have a new default template and the desired cell format. More about templates can be found in the help system as I stated before. Also this is not an RFE as you could set the numberformat by default using the above description. Best regards Frank
Well, perhaps I've been neglectful, but I think this should be a standard as it's far more common than the normally included number of weeks in the year. In 1.0.1, I set a new default template and found that it significantly delayed opening the program. That's why I've resisted doing it. My computer's only 333MHz, so it's a bit slow anyway. I'll give it a try and see if it creates the same significant delay. If it does, I'll reopen, as I really think it should be among the standard date default formats.
