Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 17134
Users Page/Site Map
Last modified: 2012-01-29 22:18:52 UTC
**This issue is a bookmark issue** Do not assign to yourself. Only add your cc to the list. We need a page and site map for users. This is urgent. thanks Louis
How about what I started two weeks ago? It's not particularly clean but I did ask for feedback on what to do next. NO REPLIES!! See http://pathtech.org/openoffice/ I think this is a start and the bad link have mostly been corrected or dropped.
hi I was away at the time. I'll look it over. thanks, louis

I provided a fair amount of feedback on the map to this list. to summarize, I liked the list but I would prefer, for usability, a map that is logical and thematic rather than linear and comprehensive. Thus: User Links General information How-tos Documentation Participation Developer General SDK Etc. For developer we can use Erwin's developer page, website.ooo/developer/ for the user, it's not just a map of www/www project, which I can easily create using source browsing; it is rather a map of useful objects in the OOo domain. I think using google would be one way of doing this, too; I also have, by now, many useful links. they just need to be organized. Created attachment 8317 [details] OOo Help Outline
I just attached a copy of an outline of help links that I assembled in Writer geared toward the general user. Feel free to use it if you wish and feel free to modify it in any way that you wish. I have been maintaining an html copy that I have posted on my website, and it is starting to get some decent traffic, but I wonder if that is bothering my service provider...they are watching my stats now. I can see their logins. I will help work to modify it to your liking too, if you wish, as a small chunk of your work at hand. Please let me know if or how I can help.
Ger, closer to my vision but it's a little chaotic; less is better than more. Ideally, we should have a table with some key links, eg, Users How-tos Guides Templates etc. the problem is that we also have, of course, many languages; each lang project is charged with managing its own relative site, as are the other virtual hosts (eg, api). But what we really don't need much of is the map of the www project, which is obtainable here, http://www.openoffice.org/source/browse/www/www/ but which is also rather opaque. Rather, a simple key to the most accessed files regardless of location. they are: Downloads, dictionaries, documentation, installation files; general project information such as about, introduction, contributing. For developers, it's easier; we can use website.openoffice.org/developer as a starting point. See, then, the introduction page (http://www.openoffice.org/about_us/introduction.html, the documentation page, http://www.openoffice.org/documentation.openoffice.org for some useful links). I can also compile a rough sketch of what I further mean, if I'm sounding incoherent here. :) thanks Louis
Just to keep everyone up-to-date, I am reorganizing my orignal in the manner you first outlined. With Diane's contribution I see that there are other off-site link that should be included too. Please watch http://pathtech.org/openoffice/ for changes. The important link is the one attributed to Louis.
As I have been working today, it would seem to me that we need some top level consilidation. For example, the native language projects really should have a launching page rather than employing the individual first level links now provided. This would make the sitemap cum bibliography easier to manage and allow OO.org to advertize ALL the working language implementations in one place. There are likely other candidates for this type of consolidation. I am proceeding on the assumption that this is acceptable. I am also continuing to employ description text with each entry. You may, course look, but please add to the issue comments rather than directly to me, please. If you wish we can take this idea into personal emails and see where it leads.
I would appreciate some comments now. The page is nowhere complete but it is in the form needed and I would like to get lists of links that are possibly rare and/or esoteric that might belong. I would also like some ideas on how we could handle the native language projects. I suggested a consolidating page but no one has responded.
ger, please send a link to dev@website; you might also include dev@marketing, and dev@support. They are the ones who really need to see this. adding cph. louis
There is a link for OOoDocs which connects here: http://ooodocs.sourceforge.net/ I like how the site map is starting to look. It's becoming well organized, and is much easier to read than it was at first. I like to see the native language links and resources grouped together. They were not grouped together in the first version, and that seemed to make it hard to find them, because there appeared to be no logical organization. But, I also speak only English, and may not be the best person to judge how they might be organized. I use them to guide folks to them. For me, when they are all together, they are easier for me to find. It also accentuates all the languages that are covered this way. None of the links to Melissa's Thesaurus seem good right now. Will you please change my name from Mack to Mackay in your title link? Or consider moving my name from your link title altogether? I do not like seeing my name written incorrectly, especially when it is assigned to a piece of my work. :)
Unless someone goes looking for this issue, it's unlikely anyone other than a select few will ever see it. Nonetheless I have made the correction you requested. Sorry but I didn't know about your last name being mackay from your email address mackmoon@<whereever>. I thank you for the collection, I had about half of what you collected and I am using yours to flesh out the page. About the melissa links, they work fine for me. Probably a local problem with your browser or dns. I asked for a single page from which to access the native-lang stuff. Having one would make it easy to maintain this page whilst the native lang people could help maintain the launchpad page. Since my original search of the site gave a large number of these I think I try to build an example.
About broadcasting the address. I would prefer to keep the number of visitors low at my end. So could I impose on the cc people on this list to let a few others know so my system is not swampped? I intend to upload/cvs this at first opportunity so I see little advantage to a bradcast at this time.
Thank you for correcting my name. I don't care so much about other folks, I cared more about how it made me feel when I saw it. Sorry for the inconvenience to you. I appreciate the update. Thank you again. The Melissa links still do not work for me. I can see the top page that is linked to your page, but I cannot open nor download the files on it. My browser is Mozilla 1.2.1, and I do not believe it is my service provider. Did you try to click on the links in the page also? I get this url when I click on them: http://www.math.umd.edu/~dcarrera/Theasaurus.pdf or if I right click on them to "save link target as...", I get a pop up box that says, "The link could not be saved. The web page might have been removed or had its name changed." Kind Regards, Diane
I have commented out dcarrerra's stuff. Schools out or maybe graduated. I'll see if there are other sources
Greetings, I am just starting to understand the JCA a bit better, and I wonder if my file attached here is not legitimate for use. I do not know if links to other helpful sites falls under this JCA or not. But if they do, then it should be up to the creators of those documents to which I have linked, as to whether or not the links become part of the OOo site. I am flagging you of this, because I am not fully aware of how it works, as far as links go, and I may have erred. If you have used links from the page I created in other places on the site, that are not OOo site links, maybe it is best for OOo/Sun, and the owner of the information to decide if they should be linked to the OOo site. My original JCA has not yet been sent, and I am now debating if I will send it, if only to protect others in this file I attached. I am posting this here, because I want you aware of what may be a mistake on my part. I hope you will be responsible with/for the links if you use them, and please educate me, so that I can understand better, and contribute better. Please forgive me for this error, if it is one. Diane
I think I have got something close to what everyone wants. I would appreciate it if everyone attached to this issue would please have a peek see (http://pathtech.org/openoffice/sitemap_lsp.html) If you have a pet project or link that you want included, please let me know soonest. I would like to put the page into CSS format before uploading it.

Redo CC list
uh? louis
Is there a problem changing my email address in the cclist?
well, it only uses OOo addresses. You need to change your address via the update profile button on your start page. louis
I am trying to bring the page into the style that I see with the main page. Unfortunately, I need some help with preparing to use style.css. Docs and/or hand-holding would be appreciated.
Ger, you can use local style calls which I can then add to the master styel.css page, which is here, http://look.openoffice.org/master/style.css The same address should obtain, with some mods, in the upgrade. more specifically, what help do you need? louis
I'm looking for a sample html file that has not been rendered and meets the standard. I'm not certain how to use the styles wrt the site and would like to see something unprocessed by my browser. Can I get this from the testbed? Confused :-)
The follwoing link appeared in my mailbox: http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/misc/sitemap.html If this meets all criteria, I recommend that we use it.
as mentioned on the list, I was working on the same thing (using same model) as John ;and posted it about the same time :) I'd like some developer information to be also included, see http:// website.openoffice.org/developer/ and perhaps use a version of what I proposed, http://website.openoffice.org/tryouts/ misc/sitemap-lsp.html by adding just the category, 'developer' the idea again is to point to files that are on and not Ooo; most of the pages are static as such and project owners add their own. louis
Created attachment 8820 [details] Gerry's sitemap (replace resource section?)
Rebranding has made this effort redundant. I suggest that the content of the attached sitemap_grs.html file be used to replace and/or suppliment the existing resource section. I believe its content will address various comments made on the [2c26] mailing list.
hi, ger, I agree with you. Let's try the map out in practice ;) louis
Ger, I agree with your comment that we should use John McCreesh's sitemap at http:// website.openoffice.org/tryouts/misc/sitemap.html . I'd like to move ahead with John's and merge the work you have done in finding links, etc., with his. We can have an increasing Resource section--but it may confuse people (which to use? site or resource). But, ideally, the Resource section could replace www/www/ documentation.html Adding John to cc list. if all are in agreement, once John's map is finished, I suggest we link to it from the homepage, move it to www/www/sitemap.html and inform the support project.
I've had no more comments on the page for some time, so as far as I'm concerned it is in a finished state and may be put 'live' at any time. John
accepting. louis
