Description johnt 2003-07-18 19:27:17 UTC
It's hosed. I have not had problems with versions up through 1.1beta, either
installing or uninstalling. With RC1, the first obvious problem was that the
fonts that should have been available weren't shown in the word processor, only
a couple of fonts in print that didn't fit into the fontlist box. I would call
this a user interface problem except that when I uninstalled RC1 and
re-installed 1.1beta, the same problem occurred.

I always uninstall an existing installation before installing another one, and
this is the first problem I've found with these procedures.

Therefore the installer has a problem setting up fonts for RC1, and the
uninstaller leaves the problem in place.

The uninstaller does not remove the registry entries for OpenOffice, and as
others have noted, some of the entries are OpenOffice and others are soffice.
This is very confusing and inconsistent, and might be a factor in the installing
and uninstalling. However, RC1 is the first version I've tried that has obvious
problems.

RC1 (and possibly earlier versions) try to dial up my internet connnection when
starting---this includes the quickstarter module. There is no reason for this,
and I don't give the program permission to go online. But I can't find the
setting to tell it not to try to dial out. This is a separate bug, but may have
connections to the defective registry processing done by the installation and
deinstallation code.

RC1 needs substantial fixing before you release it as the official 1.1.

The installation removed all fonts from the win.ini font list (read
via sysedit.exe), though all Windows 98SE fonts were still on the
disk. The fonts installed with previous versions of Openoffice were
not present, and several sets of European fonts were installed, but
didn't show up in the font list displays.

Where are all the nice fonts that were included in previous versions
of Openoffice?

RC1 IS EARLY ALPHA SOFTWARE WITH THIS MONSTER BUG, NOT A RELEASE
CANDIDATE. IT'S NOT AT ALL ACCEPTABLE. YOU SHOULD REMOVE IT FROM
RELEASE CANDIDATE STATUS AND WARN PEOPLE ABOUT ITS PROBLEMS.

If others have no problems with RC1 on Win98, my problem may have been
affected by some kind of email content that probably arrived before my
problems with RC1. My email program should not automatically open
files or run scripts, so I don't know what really happened.
Comment 3 Olaf Felka 2003-07-22 09:24:29 UTC
I can't reproduce on my Win98 box. All fonts have the 'don't delete'
flag in script. So they should not be removed by setup.
Comment 4 johnt 2003-07-22 17:42:18 UTC
I have no idea what the problem is. I use Mozilla for browsing and
email, and it should not automatically run any executable email
attachment. I think that before my problem with RC1, there was an
email that caused a temporary icon problem and who knows what else,
and evidently deleted itself. This shouldn't have happened. This could
be related to my font problem too.

I later installed RC1 and found that all fonts except Win98 and some
Euro fonts were gone missing from the Font directory, and saw only one
font in one size listed in the drop-down list in Openoffice and also
Wordpad. I got my fonts working again by re-installing Win98 clean,
then some updates and essential software.

Are there any registry settings that affect what fonts are accessible
to the Windows OS? Could a Java or Javascript item in an email change
registry settings? Even so, my mail program shouldn't run any executable.

Has anyone else reported RC1 installation problems?

No such problems.
