Description lars 2003-07-16 15:20:57 UTC
not divide pages into columns, but:

allow the user to set start and end markings on the vertical ruler for the
purpose of indicating start and end border of a column.

allow the user to set multiple such corresponding start and end markings.

give those markings a context menu with which the user can set the current
active column and also switch back to full page width editing.

What the column editing does: it restricts editing to the column width: line,
break, centering, right-justifiying, block-justifying all work, but only
relative to this column. The user stays in this column mode until he explicitly
switches back to full width mode.

There can be several columns parallely: the user just indicates the column to
be used (by selecting one from the ruler) and sets the caret on the line he
wants to start editing in. It's no problem that there might be another column
defined already on either side.

jw: i think you can use sections in OOo for your needs.
instead of formating the page with columns take sections where you are
able to set start/end borders set diffent width, borderstyles and etc.

I didn't know about sections; they are not unhandy (btw.:
make "editing" them more transparent: it's not clear that a vertical
grey line seperates sections, some indication "section
1", "rest", ... (as a context tip or some other indication in the
gui) and a context menu option "Section..." for sections will be
helpful), but it doesn't allow me to do what I liked.

First a clarification: currently, "columns" are more or less fixed
columns where text flows inside column 1, then onto column 2 and so
on.

What I like is an extension of the current "line border system" where
one can drag the left top indicator on the vertical ruler and the
right bottom indicator on this ruler to define start and end of the
text flow in the lines of a paragraph.

under this context, see the original description again; note: those
should be fixed start and end markings on the vertical ruler and one
explicitly has to enter such a column; start and end marking of
different columns may overlap. Regarding the "There can be several
columns parallely": this means "~ with text in them on one/several
line/s".

I hope it's clearer now.

Reason for having such editing: simpler more custom layouts when eg.
working with images and text to be placed at these images.
