Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 16942
Hard to replace font attributes -> Help needs improvement
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:41:36 UTC
It is possible to search for character attributes like font colour. But -- though there are settings to change the font colour to bkack in the replace dialogue, they have no effect. Steps to reproduce: Create a document, and change some of the text to red (or whatever) Try to find .+ with the atttribute-> font set. This will find the coloured text, as it should Now set, in the replace box, &, and format->font->automatic. Actual behaviour: The font will not change when the replace is perfomred. Expected behaviour: the font colour should change.

You have to check the Attribute "font color" not only "font". That wasn't written (but probably you did, as you wrote that the coloured text was found). All this works fine in OOo645m13 Build 8660 (and OOo 1.1RC1, Build 8639) too). Set to "Worksforme". Please reopen if you have further details.
Thank you, Stefan. It does work as you describe. I think the dialogue might be clearer -- or, as a more practical suggestion -- the help text could be improved. But I never know where to file suggestions for improving or clarifying the help pages, which is a shame. Improving the help files seems to me to be an obvious place where volunteer effort could improve both OOo and Star Office. But there is no way I have ever discovered to do this.
SBA->UFI: As discussed, have a look to improve the help about this. Reopened.
I adjusted the title to reflect the state of this issue. Prio changed to P4. Reassigned to Uwe.
As I understand, this bug now says: "There should be a guide in the Help about how to find and replace font colors that were set directly without using styles." There are about 40 different attributes in the Find&Replace/Attributes dialog, "font color" is one of them. So the above guide should be written as one example how to use the Attributes find&replace functionality. I will add this to the list of suggested themes for new guides. There will be some new guides for the next version, but we must also respect the other priority to "keep the total word count low" for the documentation.
I think now that having a dialogue with 40 different attirbutes is a mistake from the UI point of view. We need, really to change the whole find and replace UI to make it simpler.
added new file shared/guide/find_attributes.xph
