Description jhansonxi 2003-07-13 22:30:02 UTC
Source: Excel 2003 XLS spreadsheet with Data Range/query defined.

What should happen: OOO should import the existing Excel Data Range as a
Spreadsheet Database Range. Then there should be a way to reconnect the range
to an existing query in the DSB.

What does happen: The data is imported but the range definition is lost.

Workaround:
1. Connect the queried database as a Data Source. If the source was a query,
recreate it if necessary.

2. Open the XLS file in OOO Spreadsheet.

3. Open the Data Source Browser (View > Data Sources, F4) and browse to the
table or query. Click on the table/query and drag it to the start of the
original data range in the spreadsheet. You must drag-n-drop in order to create
the database range since a copy & past approach doesn't work as expected:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16792

4. Fix the overwritten columns, etc. when the new Database Range lands in the
wrong cell:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16790

Note: You are stuck with the column headings since OOO doesn't have a way to
suppress them like Excel (External Data Range Properties > Include field names):
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=12523

5. Reset any existing cell formatting that was trashed by the import:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=16791

6. To learn how to update a database range in an OOO spreadsheet, refer to the
online help index for the "Refresh Data" feature. This should lead you to the
"Comparing Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org Terms" equivalent commands
summary. It indicates that the OOO command "Reload" in the File menu is the
equivalent to the M$ Office XP command "Refresh Data". Do it now.

7. Repeat steps 1-5 then save your work this time. Skip step 6. Instead, use
the correct command from the Data menu, "Refresh Range":

8. Reset any cell formatting that existed in the Database Range

Comment 4 utomo99 2003-09-16 09:05:31 UTC
Can you please attach the documents, so we can test it .

Thank you for a clear bug report. But it would be a great help if you
could submit the sheet that is giving you problems (or, if it has
confidential infomartion, another Excel 2003 sheet with a defined
range so we can reproduce it.

utomo> jeff:
Please Attach the documents which make this problem, so we can test
it/faster to confirm.
(Without the documents, we cannot confirm the problem easily/need more
time)
Don't forget to cut other part of the documents, so the file size is
small, but we still able to see the problem.

Hi,

this is not possible for now. So this is a request for enhancement and
I change the flags.

@utomo
I've talked to DR (the developer for the Excel filter) and he is aware
of this.

Summary: What should happen: OOO should import the existing Excel
Data Range as a Spreadsheet Database Range. Then there should be a
way to reconnect the range to an existing query in the DSB.
What does happen: The data is imported but the range definition is lost.
This one is considered for OO.o later (area ms-interoperability), is
will take time because it means a big rebuilding work.
