when merging cells in calc it's pretty annoying to go the format menu item every 
time. there should be an item "merge cells" in the context menu for cells.

oops. please close/remove this issue, i noticed that i hadn't changed 
priority so tried to click stop & change it. it seems, i was too slow

As merge cells is not so often used in spreadsheet as other functions
(e.g. format cell, delete cell, etc.), it is not part of the context menu.

well, it seems that it would be better to vote for 
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=7449 to allow 
customization of context menus :)
