Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 16555
On demand activation of "Extended Tips" mode inside dialogs.
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:32:45 UTC
Sometimes you are inside a dialog (Options..., Configure..., whatever) and you don't understand what a certain option does. The 'HELP' button is good but it makes you leave what you are doing and as it opens an etire new window in front of whatever you were doing. It's not very productive. It'd be great if we could just have a '?' mini icon standing to the left of the 'X' button on the dialog window title bar. It could do the same as in Windows, i.e.: activate the Extended Tips mode in a "One Time" fashion, where it'd show the tip for the option we clic on and then automatically deactivetes itself. I see all the technology required for it it's already there (as when you place the cursor over an option when in Extended Tips mode it already does what I want), all it remains is making it work that way. The question: So why don't you just leave Extended Tips 'on' all the time? is a good one. :) One answer would be that sometimes it turns annoying to have a big description displayed everytime you accidentally leave the cursor over an option or button everywhere in the program. (perhaps after all that's the main reason an 'extended' mode exists for tips and is not 'on' by default) Anyway I think this could save a lot of time for the user. What do you think? thx! Reassigned to Bettina.
You can activate extended tips temprarly using <shift>+<F1> Please comment whether this suits your needs or whether the additional icon is necessary in your opinion
It's great to discover the function I requested already existed. Thanks! I still think an icon to access this handy function should exist, specially in dialogs as button to the left of the 'x' as seems to be standard in other programs (perhaps a button in the main tool bar would be useful too). Perhaps this issue should be treated as a usability one, since the function already exist, it's just about how to better access it. Gabriel Gazzán
